From the principal

Dear parents and caregivers

Kia ora koutou katoa

The school roll is 243 this week and I estimate the roll will peak at around 275 near the end of the year. We can cope with this number with the resources and the accommodation we currently enjoy.

As many of you will know, our roll was much lower some years ago and a lot of Valley families went to George St or Opoho Schools. What surprised me when I first started here was that this school had very high achievement, but the roll was not strong.

So our aim back then was to highlight to the community that this was a great school. We started telling people that their neighbourhood school offered as good, if not better, than schools beyond. We also painted the school, tidied up a few of the aesthetics and became more involved in the community.

But the most significant factor I highlighted, and still highlight, is that the first duty of our staff is to care for the children. That was very evident when I started here and is still evident today. All else came later.

Therefore, I was really taken with this meme when I saw it. It sums up for me what we strive for at our school:

“A recent large-scale review of the factors associated with student achievement showed that
teacher-student relationships
outweighed the contribution of
teachers’ subject knowledge,
teacher training, or home and
school effects.”

Kia kaha tatou katoa ki te tautoko o tatou tamariki, mokopuna hoki.

John McKenzie
Principal

Parent helpers are needed for this trip. Please talk to one of our teachers.

We have a busy few weeks coming up and all these great opportunities for children are paid for by the school donation.
The senior school will be exploring the rocky shore and having a beach education day at Warrington on Thursday and then start their swimming block the following Monday.
The middle syndicate will be looking at how creatures adapt to living in tidal zones and how to look after our oceans during a visit to the Portobellow Aquarium on 13 and 14 March.
