Week 5 ~ Term 4
From the Principal
Dear Parents & Caregivers

Kia ora tatou katoa

Staff News

It is with a mixture of sadness and pride that we can announce to the community that our long serving teacher Whaea Maria Kewene-Edwards has accepted an offer to work at the College of Education.

Maria has taught here for 20 years and has been an integral part of our team - leading kapa haka, introducing Maori tikanga to the school, teaching across the school, leading the senior school, and joint teaching in Te Roopu Manaaki.

In the ‘old days’ it was common for normal-school teachers to move on to the College of Education. Since the College merged with the University most teachers have not been able to secure work at the College due to the minimum masters level qualification required. Maria completed her masters a couple of years ago so meets this University requirement.

We will farewell Mrs. Kewene-Edwards before the end the term. We do congratulate her and thank her for amazing commitment to the school & community.

We have nearly sorted out a replacement for Maria in the bi-lingual class.

Nga mihi,

John McKenzie

North Zone Athletics Student Thoughts

“At North Zone I competed in sprints and relays. Relays was first but it turned out that we got into the finals because there weren’t enough relay groups so then we had to wait for about 3 hours for the finals.” - Elspeth C3

“It was exhilarating, my relay team and I were sitting up in the grandstand cheering on other members of NEVNS. Everyone was either running, jumping, panting, or cheering. That’s the call for relays Under-10 girls, it was our time to shine…” - Lena C3

“My favourite part was when we did the sprints because we had to run as fast as we could. I gave it my all!” -  Daniel C3

“On Tuesday we went to North Zone Athletics. We all did amazing at sprints and relays and other events. At relay under-10 girls, our team got 2nd place. In sprints we both came 5th. It was a very fun day.” -  Ruhaina and Fleur H1
