August 2018
Message from the President

There is a saying that “your network is your net worth” and our recent MPI D/FW Chapter events certainly reminded us of the importance of networking in our industry.

The Dallas/Fort Worth Chapters of HSMAI and MPI merged in July for our second dual meeting.  With the Global organizations of both chapters offering a Dual Membership Discount, the pairing makes perfect sense.  The groups were able to blend together on common ground to form new relationships, reunite with old friends, and learn how to resolve conflict in our everyday lives through speaker Michelle Johnson from The Anchor Group.

Our members were honored with their milestone pins which celebrated anniversaries ranging from 5-year to 40-years, including Greg Elam and Suzann Oliver who received the esteemed honor of their 40-year pin.  What an accomplishment!   Congratulations to all the recipients on their anniversary and thank you for continuing to support the chapter.  Read more.

Volunteering: If I Have To Explain IT, You Wouldn't Understand!
By Steven G. Foster, CMP

I’m often asked about the value of volunteering in the MPI Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter; and I always use the same analogy; it’s very much like motorcycling. Bikers ride to connect with a Tribe of people with similar passions; to build new skills, create amazing experiences and go places most others only wish they could go.

In the Harley-Davidson “Tribe” there’s a popular saying; “If I have to explain IT to you, you wouldn’t understand.” This perfectly captures how we “two-wheel disciples” struggle with explaining something so necessary and rewarding to most people who are just going through the motions in a four-wheeled world. This is exactly what my longtime friend and MPI D/FW Hall of Honor Award recipient O.D. O’Donnell has been preaching across his own 33 years of MPI membership; “It’s like a bank account. If you don’t put anything into it, you can’t take anything out of it.”  Read more.

CSR of the Quarter

In Uganda, 40% of women are married as children and care for an average of nine dependents in Akola communities.  In Dallas, TX, 48% of single mothers live in poverty.  It is Akola’s desire and mission to change those statistics.  AKOLA Jewelry Project is a nonprofit jewelry brand that empowers women in Uganda and Dallas, TX to redesign their stories. Each piece is handcrafted by 1 of 500 women in poverty working to redesign the future of their families. 100% of Akola revenue is reinvested in our mission to help these women transform their families and communities.

Akola jewelry will be on display for purchase at both the August Happy Hour and the September Chapter Experience.  Our goal is for every attendee to purchase one piece for themselves or a loved one.
