PRINCIPAL'S INTRODUCTION

Dear Parents / Family / Whanau

Term 1 has been a successful term for this college and our students.  I thank you for the support that you continue to provide to your children and the college.  Our students have earned a well deserved break and I would ask that they complete any assessments set over this period in a timely fashion as well as actively seeking to include rest and recovery in this holiday time.  I look forward to seeing our students return to school fresh for the new term beginning 2 May 2016.

YEAR 9 TRANSITION SURVEY RESULTS

We recently conducted an anonymous survey of our year 9 students to gauge our enrolment and transition to College processes. The results have been very affirming.

Year 9 students have indicated that the Prospectus, Open Evening, visits to the contributing schools and Orientation Day on their first day provided them with the information that they required to allow for an easy transition.
Students were also surveyed to see how they have managed since that first day.
  • 98% indicated that they feel welcomed at MMC.
  • 95% indicate that teachers and fellow students are helpful when needed.
  • 97% state that they enjoy being at MMC.
  • 100% have indicated that they are learning at MMC.
Some quotes include
  • “having a blast so far! love all my classes and teachers”
  • “Loving all the opportunities”
  • “The only thing was I had no friends in my class and was a bit worried about that, but I made some awesome friends and would not want to change classes now”
  • “There is something about MMC that I really love. I think it might be the friendly vibe when you walk in or the kind people who attend”

I acknowledge the way in which staff and students have helped make the transition for our year 9s a success and how they continue to welcome the increasing number of new enrolments that seem to come throughout the school year.

ROAD SAFETY

We would ask if you could please re-iterate with your student about road safety messages and specifically identifying and responding to traffic hazards. This is particularly pertinent for those students catching the bus on Hewletts Road and those students biking across Golf Road, Ranch Road and Waitui Grove. It is important that these students are aware of the other road users and their need to give way to vehicles and not simply expect that these vehicles will give way to them.

LEAVING SCHOOL

Students have been spoken to in assemblies about their requirement to remain at school for the duration of the school day. Students are not permitted to leave our school site at interval or lunchtime unless they have a legitimate reason such as a doctor’s appointment etc. In the case of an appointment, students must present a note signed by a parent or caregiver to the student office in order to be signed out.

STAFF CARPARK / STUDENT DROP OFF

The congestion of vehicles and fast traffic in the staff carpark before and after school has become a Health & Safety concern.

We ask that you arrange to collect your child on a nearby street or that they look at other forms of transport to get to and from school.

We do not want to be placed in the situation where by we are obliged to lock the front entry gate as we do have some students with different abilities that legitimately need to be collected within the staff carpark.

REPORTING A STUDENT'S ABSENCE

Student absences longer than three days must be notified in writing to the Principal by emailing
principal@mmc.school.nz any other absences can be reported by telephone 575 3096 ext 828 or emailing attendance@mmc.school.nz

It is important to remember the college’s requirement that students have a 90% justified attendance and 85% assessment completion record to graduate to the next level.  Because of the need to ensure validity in assessments, it may not be possible to reschedule assessments that may be missed during a student's absence.

SCHOOL TRUSTEE ELECTIONS

The Triennial Board of Trustees elections are underway.  This is the largest democratic process undertaken in New Zealand.  The Mount Maunganui College Board has vacancies that need filling!  We need willing and capable members of our school community to put themselves forward to contribute to the continued effective governance of Mount Maunganui College.

School Trusteeship is a valuable and rewarding role.

The board has the overall responsibility for the school. This includes legal obligations covering curriculum, property, personnel, finance and health and safety. Trustees are active leaders in their schools and need to work well in a team, ask challenging questions and have good communication skills. Boards need a balance of skills and experiences to ensure effective processes for planning, monitoring, reporting and reviewing the school’s performance are in place.

Interested?  Check out www.trustee-election.co.nz for more information regarding trusteeship, or for info specific to Mount Maunganui College Board Of Trustees operation, please email Board Chair Stuart Taylor, stuartt@mmc.school.nz

Keep your eye out for nomination forms arriving in the post.  Nominations must be received by Mrs Donna Beattie, School Returning Officer by noon on Friday 20 May 2016.  Act now, don’t delay!
