Dear Parents / Family / Whanau
Welcome to the beginning of Term 2.  I trust that a pleasant holiday was had by all and that your students have returned to school determined to succeed.

We look forward to our Senior Ball being held tomorrow at the ASB Arena and I know that our students will continue to uphold the high standards of behaviour that have been a feature of previous years.

On Thursday of next week we will celebrate our first all school event which is the annual school cross country.  While the phrase cross country may place fear into the hearts and minds of some of our students, I wholeheartedly encourage all students to participate whether as a serious athlete or simply walking with friends.   This is such a wonderful occasion it would be a shame for students to miss out on celebrating being a part of the Mount Maunganui College community.  Dress-ups in house colours is encouraged to add to the atmosphere.

Russell Gordon

Due to the continued congestion of vehicles and fast traffic in the staff carpark and the undue risk that this presents to students and staff we now close the front entry gate prior to the end of the school day.

We ask that you do not use the exit gate to enter the staff carpark at this time.

We are holding a car boot sale on Saturday 21 May from 9am in the front carpark at school to raise funds for a group of Year 12 / 13 students travelling to Fiji in September on a service trip to help at risk teenage boys.

Items for sale include clothes, books, white elephant, bake sale, sausage sizzle, coffee, homemade pizzas to take away and cook later.

Donations would also be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the school office. We will also welcome other cars to join the car boot sale with a $20 entrance fee / charge to park.

Please feel free to contact Claire Fuller if you have any questions or queries by telephoning 575 3096 extension 848 or emailing

We would ask if you could please re-iterate with your student about road safety messages and specifically identifying and responding to traffic hazards. This is particularly pertinent for those students catching the bus on Hewletts Road and those students biking across Golf Road, Ranch Road and Waitui Grove. It is important that these students are aware of the other road users and their need to give way to vehicles and not simply expect that these vehicles will give way to them.

Students have been spoken to in assemblies about their requirement to remain at school for the duration of the school day. Students are not permitted to leave our school site at interval or lunchtime unless they have a legitimate reason such as a doctor’s appointment etc. In the case of an appointment, students must present a note signed by a parent or caregiver to the student office in order to be signed out.

It is important to remember the college’s requirement that students have a 90% justified attendance and 85% assessment completion record to graduate to the next level.  Because of the need to ensure validity in assessments, it may not be possible to reschedule assessments that may be missed during a student's absence.

The Triennial Board of Trustees elections are underway.  This is the largest democratic process undertaken in New Zealand.  The Mount Maunganui College Board has vacancies that need filling!  We need willing and capable members of our school community to put themselves forward to contribute to the continued effective governance of Mount Maunganui College.

School Trusteeship is a valuable and rewarding role.

The board has the overall responsibility for the school. This includes legal obligations covering curriculum, property, personnel, finance and health and safety. Trustees are active leaders in their schools and need to work well in a team, ask challenging questions and have good communication skills. Boards need a balance of skills and experiences to ensure effective processes for planning, monitoring, reporting and reviewing the school’s performance are in place.

Interested?  Check out for more information regarding trusteeship, or for info specific to Mount Maunganui College Board Of Trustees operation, please email Board Chair Stuart Taylor,

Keep your eye out for nomination forms arriving in the post.  Nominations must be received by Mrs Donna Beattie, School Returning Officer by noon on Friday 20 May 2016.  Act now, don’t delay!
