Construction - Good news for the continuing restoration of the tower to ensure it will be around for the next 100 years. Fabrication of the steel for the 24 cross braces has been completed. The pieces are being delivered to the supplier who will ship them out for galvanization. After that they will be delivered to the DEC maintenance facility where they will be prepared for the flight to the summit. When the preparation is complete, the DEC will finalize the request with the NYS Police Aviation Unit for the scheduled flight. Once the braces are on top of the mountain, the installation will begin!!! We’ll keep you posted on the progress by Facebook, website and newsletter. A Cloudsplitter Grant, DEC funding, some generous anonymous donations and hundreds of smaller donations are enabling us to move forward with this project, but we still have many more goals to accomplish.
Tower Stewards - Our tower stewards, provided through Paul Smith’s College (PSC) Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) have been busy this summer. So far they've reached 469 people in 16 days on the summit. There are still plenty of opportunities for volunteer stewards. Just check out the calendar at http://www.friendsofstregis.org/calendar/ and pick your slot. This is strictly a volunteer effort and you can go for 1/2 a day or a whole day. If the weather is bad, there is no obligation to go. It is fun meeting and talking to all the people, kids - and dogs - who make the trek.
Centennial Celebration - Don’t forget our centennial celebration at Lake Clear Lodge. Please join us at their beautiful facility on Sunday, August 5th at 1:30 PM. This is a FREE event open to the public. You are all invited. There will be a ceremony featuring a number of the partners responsible for the preservation and restoration of the tower. There will also be food, beverages and entertainment with live music by local band “Birch Boys”. Get a close-up view with the Lodge’s telescope!! Picnic lunches can be purchased and enjoyed down by the lake. Dinner reservations are also available by contacting the Lodge for reservations at 518-891-1489.
Other centennial events include:
– This Saturday, July 28, 2018 2PM to 3:30PM: A presentation by noted fire tower historian Marty Podskoch at the Paul Smith’s College VIC Auditorium.
– Saturday, September 1st – 9:00 PM: Lighting of the Tower. Find a vantage point and watch for the light. This is part of an effort by many tower groups to light up towers throughout the Adirondacks and Catskills. Also, the Lake Clear Lodge will be hosting a “Lighting Party” on their beautiful beach with a great view of the tower through their telescope! Special $25 dinners are available by reservation. Contact the Lodge for reservations at 518-891-1489.
Saranac Lake Art Walk - In June and July, board members Scottie Adams and Rich LaBombard represented the Friends at the Saranac Lake Art Walk, which is held on the third Thursday of the month during the summer. They had a display table featuring a sharp new banner and informative poster, brochures and hats, patches and raffle tickets. Many people stopped by to check it out , talk about the tower and pick up a free sticker. There is one more Art Walk on August 16th. We are looking for a couple of volunteers to setup and staff the table. Let us know if you would like to help with this.
Fire Tower Fever - On July 14th the Adirondack Experience and the Adirondack Mountain Club teamed up to offer a “Fire Tower Fever” event at the museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Board members Rich LaBombard, Ed Hixson and Doug Fitzgerald attended the event and Doug was part of the presentation. The event was fun and many tower enthusiasts attended. All were happy to hear about what has been happening with our tower.
