After six months of planning, the Virtual O’Flaherty Retreat finally begins this Sunday, Oct. 18th.  With all that’s wrong in the world, there's no better time to treat ourselves to some Irish traditional music!  Without the pubs, concert halls and festivals, it has been challenging to learn, listen to and perform the music. But participating in O’Flaherty’s will give you a golden opportunity to reconnect with the worldwide Irish music community and help keep this wonderful music alive and well even during a pandemic. If you're on the fence about enrolling, please consider:

  • The schedule is designed for working folks. The lessons are pre-recorded and all of the live events will take place on weeknights and weekends.
  • Most live events will be recorded. If you miss something, you can view it later. In fact, you will have up to seven weeks to view all of the Retreat content.
  • The pre-recorded lessons allow you to go at your own pace. You can stop, repeat, slow down, speed up, and move on when you decide. And the quality of the videos and audio is top-notch.
  • You pay only for what you want.  Only want the lessons? Okay! Just the concerts, workshops, enrichment classes and informances? Sure! The concerts alone? You bet!  We priced them separately to make the Retreat both more affordable and more flexible.
  • The prices are very reasonable.  The lessons with these internationally respected musicians/teachers average just $16.67 per lesson, $22 if you add the Instructor Q&A forums.  And for just $50 you can take advantage of the Extras package that comes with 154 live events including three full evenings of instructor concerts (each of which would cost $20 or more).

Thanks Joanie and Mirella!

It's always wonderful when instructors say nice things about the Retreat. Joanie Madden and Mirella Murray will make their second appearance at O'Flaherty's teaching whistle and piano accordion respectively.
Virtual Learning -- Will It Work?
We have worked hard to find online technologies that will work well for our Retreat. We have researched and experimented for months looking for the best fit for our event, and the Google Classroom platform is our choice. Why?
  • It’s simple to use. It is designed for users of all ages and technological backgrounds.
  • It’s all online.  You don’t have to download anything, and you can’t accidently destroy anything.
  • It takes advantage of Google apps.  We can use other helpful online apps with Google Classroom such as Google Drive, Google Meet, Google Docs, and more.
  • It’s one place where you can find everything you paid for. All pre-recorded, live and recorded content will be accessed and viewed in Google Classroom.
  • We can provide knowledgeable tech support for it. Our staff uses Classroom regularly and are happy to guide you if you need help. We also are offering training sessions.
In the end, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the ease of attending our virtual Retreat.  Please join us!

Enroll Now, Get Perks!

If you enroll now, you can get these additional events:

  • Nine instructor Concerts from past Retreats

Great Musicians,
Great Concerts
Our instructor concerts are clearly one of the best things about the Retreat.  For three evenings, you hear some of the best musicians in Irish music, and because it’s virtual, you’ll have the best seat in the house and up close and personal.  If you did not purchase the concerts as an enrolled student, you can still purchase admission to the concerts at
Do You Have Time?
Last year, our Retreat was three full days in-person. Our virtual Retreat this year is three weeks for live events and seven weeks for accessing all of the pre-recorded and recorded content. Instead of taking three full days of people’s time, we elected to give them three weeks to participate as they choose.
Three core course lessons will be distributed each Sunday night, beginning Oct. 18th.  Everything else will be hosted mostly live on weeknights and weekends held between Oct. 19th and Nov. 8th.  And since we will record our live events, you will then have the ability to view all of the content for another month afterwards, until Dec. 8th. Every event we record will be accessible, so you can pick and choose when and what to watch. That way, the Retreat schedule flexes with YOUR schedule.
Google Classroom is used in many schools across the world from elementary schools to colleges, and it will serve as our virtual camp.

We understand the concerns of those who are not particularly tech savvy, but we'll have your back, and we're confident that you'll be pleasantly surprised at the ease of attending our virtual Retreat.

Here are a few videos that will introduce you to both Google Classroom and The Commons which is where students will gather for community events and information.
