February is American Heart Health Month

February is just around the corner. Each February, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) marks American Heart Month by raising awareness about heart health and urging Americans to reduce their risk for developing heart disease. We plan to wear red on February 5, which is National Wear Red Day in support of this.
Taking care of your heart health has never been more important and there’s a lot you can do to prevent heart disease.
Get Moving:
You can start small by walking more. Commit to a walking schedule with a friend or family member, even if you can’t walk together.
Another option is to challenge your family or organization to participate in a “steps” contest. Use activity trackers to see which team takes the most steps.
Eat Heart Healthy:
Making changes to your diet can make a big difference. Try a new recipe weekly. Attend an online cooking class with friends, or check out some of the great heart healthy recipes from the American Heart Association.
Keep an Eye on Your Blood Pressure:
Know your blood pressure and get it checked regularly. Did you know that beet juice and tart cherry juice have both been shown to reduce blood pressure?
Adding one glass of beet juice a day is enough to reduce blood pressure as much as 7%, which is equivalent to medication. And a recent study showed that 8 ounces of tart cherry juice each day helped lower blood pressure and LDL "bad" cholesterol.
