Heart Health Month –
Give Your Heart a Little Love
Chances are, we all know someone who has been affected by heart disease or stroke. According to the American Heart Association, 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death every 38 seconds.
Nearly half of Americans have high blood pressure, according to new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. The new guidelines lower the threshold for what is considered normal blood pressure. The result is about 14% more U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or hypertension, than previously thought – and are now likely wondering how to lower their blood pressure.
High blood pressure can be caused by lifestyle factors or by genetics, or a combination of the two. It can be dangerous if left untreated, raising your risk for heart attack or stroke.
Making simple lifestyle changes may help reduce or eliminate your need for medical intervention to treat high blood pressure. Adding one glass of beet juice a day is enough to reduce blood pressure as much as 7%, which is equivalent to medication. This happens because beet juice contains high levels of dietary nitrate (NO3), which the body converts into nitrite (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO). In the human body, NO relaxes and dilates blood vessels, aiding blood flow.
