Messiah Anglican Church, Philadelphia

‘So that you can do it’

The readings this week have a theme of God teaching and guiding us—sometimes teaching us things we should already know. Moses in Deuteronomy 30 tells us that the law is near us, and not too hard—so that we can do it. Paul prays that God will give the Colossians more knowledge of God’s will—so they can walk worthy and bear fruit. Sometimes we don’t really want to. The lawyer in Luke 10 knows the law and what he should do, but he asks Jesus anyway. Our psalmist reminds us that God teaches us his ways and his paths, but (strengthened by his power) we still have to walk them.

Join us tomorrow in Germantown for Morning Prayer and lunch. Dr. Thomas will be preaching. Note: there is no online link this week.

Show me your ways, O Lord,*
and teach me your paths.

Wednesday Evening Prayer

No meeting this week. We’re taking a short summer break from our Wednesday gatherings for dinner and Evening Prayer. We will resume on July 20.

Summer book group starts next week!

This summer we will read and discuss the great (and brief!) classic of Christian doctrine, Athanasius’ On the Incarnation. We will meet on the following Thursdays at 7pm at the Edman home in Philadelphia:

  • July 14 - C. S. Lewis’s preface; Chapter 1: Creation and the Fall
  • July 21 - Chapters 2-3: The Divine Dilemmas
  • July 28 - Chapters 4-5: Christ’s Death and Resurrection
  • August 11 - Chapters 6-9: Refutations and Conclusion

Dessert and drinks will be provided. We aim for this to be mostly in person, but if you are distantly located and want to join in via Zoom, we can do that as well. If you plan to join us please RSVP for location and Zoom link information.

From the Treasurer

We encourage you to support the work God is doing through Messiah Anglican Church. Checks can be mailed or brought to a church service. Giving through is easy, and you can also set up recurring gifts through that service.
