Dear <<First Name>>,
This Sunday we continue our series The Gospel According to the Beatles with the song All You Need is Love. We'll hear the wonderful music shared by JoyFul Noise, and explore what this song might mean for us today.
Please enjoy this short essay from my friend and Beatle's expert, Todd Lowry.
"In early 1967 the Beatles were approached by the BBC to take part in the first ever live global television broadcast-- a show planned for the summer called “Our World.” The Beatles were asked to write a simple song for the occasion that would be understood by different nationalities. John responded to the challenge with All You Need Is Love.
"John has said that wanted to write something with the timelessness of “We Shall Overcome,” the protest song popularized by Pete Seeger which, starting in the late 1950’s, had become the anthem for the American Civil Rights Movement.
"On June 25, 1967, the television show “Our World” was broadcast live. The Beatles had created a rhythm track in the studio but they sang the song live, accompanied by an orchestra and many friends in attendance, including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and Keith Moon. The song perfectly captured the aspirations of international youth in 1967 and the subsequent recording became the anthem for the Summer of Love.
"The song has a simple, memorable chorus with a universal and direct message--All you need is LOVE--not romantic love, but the altruistic, universal love spoken of in religion. It’s an uncharacteristically positive message from John, who was pessimistic in the vast majority of his songs."
I lovingly invite you to join us this Sunday for "All You Need is Love."
