You're invited: Action teams of EMSP

Accomplishing our goals together!

East Metro STEAM Partnership is excited to announce a new way for partners to participate in the portions of EMSP most important to you. Through our revised Logic Model, partners are now able to join action teams that will be accountable for a specific set of outcomes over the next few years. This is a strong step toward updating our Partnership Plan. Thank you to those who attended the November partner meeting and provided feedback on this model!

Now what? Time to join an action team! Check out the opportunities and sign up below. Meetings will begin in 2018 if they haven't started already!
  • Communications & Data Action Team: Increasing awareness of STEAM & CTE for students and families
  • STEAM Education Action Team: Working to better incorporate STEAM into school and out-of-school curricula
  • Business Engagement Team: Placing students in well-paying careers AND supporting business & industry to hire local, well-prepared talent. Next meeting: Thurs, Jan 11 at 10am at City Hall of Gresham
  • Equity & Empowerment Action Team: Aiming to match the demographics of STEAM & CTE programming to that of the East Metro area. Next meeting: Tues, Jan 16 at 1pm, at MHCC's Maywood Park Campus
  • Funding Action Team: Making sure funding for STEAM programming is sustainable and equitable

Pockets of Innovation Round Two!

In 2018-2019, East Metro STEAM Partnership will showcase up to five Pockets of Innovation, providing $6,000 in support to each Pocket. In keeping with the feedback provided over the past year, these Pockets of Innovation will demonstrate partnership, equity, and regional alignment with EMSP strategies. The funds are already available and the timeline for use is longer. Outcomes and innovation will be highly valued.

Pockets of Innovation are defined by the community (you!) and we ask that each one is a partnership between more than one entity to implement an innovative solution that effectively empowers youth to pursue workforce opportunities in STEAM.

HOW?

1.  Submit a summary of a collaborative idea through THIS FORM. Entries will be collected from January 4 - February 16 at 5pm. Please do not wait until the last minute to submit! This is only a Google Form and it may not handle a rush of submissions at 4:59pm.

2.  Entries will be scored by the Leadership Team using THIS RUBRIC. Please note that priority will be given to projects not previously funded by EMSP.

3. The Leadership Team will vote at their March meeting (Thur March, 8, 2018) to select the five projects to be funded through June 30, 2019. Any Leadership Team member who is affiliated with any projects, will recuse themselves from voting to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.

The EMSP director is available to answer any questions you may have. If needed, please send an email with any questions to landen.zernickow@mhcc.edu, schedule a phone call, or request a meeting. We look forward to receiving your collaborative ideas!

Interview with a
Youth Advisory Council member

Director, Landen Zernickow, had a chance to learn from two-time Youth Advisory Council member, Liliana Rekdahl. Here’s her take on her experience with East Metro STEAM Partnership!

Landen: Tell me about yourself.
Liliana: I’m a senior at Gresham High School and in the health sciences program at CAL. I would like to become an Occupational Therapist.
Landen: That’s exciting! What made you want to be an Occupational Therapist?
Liliana: I want to be an Occupational Therapist because their goal is to improve the lives of their patients by helping them live and do things independently. Another reason is because I love working with children.
Landen: And why did you join the Youth Advisory Council?
Liliana: I joined because I plan on working in the STEAM field, and I think it's important that we involve kids and teens in STEAM when they’re young.
Landen: And what did you learn during your experience with the Fall 2017 Youth Advisory Council?
Liliana: I learned how to create a communication plan and how to brainstorm ways to inform students about STEAM opportunities. I also learned how to use 3D printers and Button Makers. Learning this was useful to the council because we made things like buttons, stickers, and keychains with EMSP logos to give to our schools and community.
Landen: Any advice for future Youth Advisory Council members?
Liliana: Some advice I would have for future members would be to think about what kind of STEAM advertisements or programs they would personally enjoy, and bring them to the council.

Thanks again to Liliana for sharing her experience with the partners of EMSP! Please encourage students age 13-20 to join the next Youth Advisory Council, by submitting an application by January 19!

Funding Updates

  • EMSP has been invited to submit a full proposal for the FIRST STEM Equity Community Innovation Grant, in hopes of funding 10 First Lego League teams and 2 First Tech Challenge teams in David Douglas, Gresham-Barlow, Centennial, and Parkrose school districts in the coming school year. Read the Notice of Intent here.
  • ODE has informed EMSP that our STEM Innovative Programming proposal will likely be funded for the STEM Beyond School and Math in Real Life projects. The Youth in STEAM Communications and STEM Leadership Academy are still under review. More details to come. Read the proposal here.
  • EMSP is working on an application to the PGE Foundation to support career-connected learning and capacity building for all action teams in our new logic model.
