Ringing in the new year, Buffalo Style

Happy New Year!

As 2019 begins to unfold, we are reflecting on a very successful 2018,
and for that we have you to thank!

Buffalonians near and far who love the Queen City as much as we do provide the support we need to keep spreading Buffalove everywhere we go.

Whether we’re at a local event selling beautiful Buffalo books or helping a new author craft the story of Buffalo they want to tell, we’re thankful to have all of you fantastic Buffalovers behind us!

Our Team is Growing!

As many of you know, Buffalo Heritage Press has been a one-woman show for nearly 12 years. Marti Gorman, the co-founder and publisher, has worked tirelessly to bring the stories of Buffalo to life in books that can be cherished, gifted and appreciated by generations to come. But being a one-woman publishing house and a relentless champion of Buffalo is challenging. So our first official order of business in 2019 is to introduce you to Buffalo Heritage Press’s newest team member: Hannah Gordon.
Hannah joined the team in August, but we were so busy during the holidays that we forgot to introduce her to you!
If you saw all of the coverage of our newest children’s book, Buffalo From A to Z, Come Take a Tour With Me, she’s identifiable with her trademark teal and purple hair.
Hannah is a Buffalo native and a graduate of St. Bonaventure University. As the press’s director of marketing and publicity, she works closely with all three of our imprints: Buffalo Heritage Press, CrissCross AppleSauce, and New Idea Press. She’s also the one who manages our social media, so if you get a response on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, it’s probably from Hannah!

Start every day with Buffalove in 2019

Celebrate Buffalo every month of the year—put a 2019 Love My Buffalo! calendar on your wall or send it to someone who loves this place as much as you do. With photography by Larry Fiorella, this beautiful 8.5 x 11" calendar is available only through Buffalo Heritage Press.

Check it out here.

Hannah presented a donation of $1,500 for Music is Art to Robby Takac during the gala launch party for Buffalo From A to Z, Come Take a Tour With Me at Parkside Candy on Sunday, November 25. The funds were raised through sales of autographed copies of the book during the Goo Goo Dolls' 20th anniversary Dizzy Up the Girl concerts at Shea's.

Q: What are you reading right now?
A: Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman. He’s a fabulous author, and this collection of short stories is almost too good to put down.

Q: How did you get to Buffalo Heritage Press?
A:
When I started at Bonaventure, I was going to be a journalist. And I loved it. I interned at The Buffalo News, ran my campus newspaper, and eventually got my B.A. in journalism and mass communication in December, 2016. Along the way, I realized something was missing—my love of books wasn’t part of my writing and editing workday.

So I investigated publishing opportunities in Buffalo and met Marti. I began working freelance with the press a few years ago while still an undergrad. I decided to do my M.A. at Bonaventure as well, graduating with a degree in integrated marketing communications in May 2018. During the summer of 2018, I attended the Denver Publishing Institute and earned a graduate certificate in book publishing.

With all these wonderful experiences under my belt, I came back to Buffalo and took my place at the Press in August. I’m so excited to be working with all three Buffalo Heritage Press imprints.

Q: Which imprint of the press is your favorite?
A:
That’s such a difficult question! Buffalo Heritage Press is great because I’m a huge Buffalo fan (and I have a Buffalo tattoo to prove it). New Idea Press has grown on me as a collection of non-fiction “new ideas” to think about, incorporating such a wide variety of topics. But if I’m being honest with myself, CrissCross AppleSauce is probably my favorite. I collect children’s literature, and my mom was a pre-K teacher, so these kinds of stories are integral to who I am. It’s hard to not fall in love with every book we publish under the CrissCross AppleSauce imprint.

Q: What’s your favorite building in Buffalo?

A: The Darwin Martin House. Hands down. I’ve been obsessed with that building since I was a child. The windows! I love it. When the Rolling Stones came to the stadium a few years ago, I bought the tour shirt that looked like a Frank Lloyd Wright window.

Q: What’s your favorite Buffalo sports team?
A:
The Sabres and the Beuts. I love hockey, and I love how this year’s Sabres lineup has been playing. But those Beuts, man. They are good!

Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A:
Read. Write. Listen to records. Do yoga. I also take photos. You can check out some of my writing and photography at Sitting In Spilt Ink, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Q: What are you most looking forward to with the press in 2019?
A:
I’ve got some plans for all three imprints that I’m really excited about. We’ll be rejuvenating BuffaloHeritage.com to bring more content to you and to better communicate about our forthcoming books. We’re also going to bring that content to our social media channels. So, if you don’t already follow us, go now! You won’t want to miss the Buffalo fun facts, plus our channels are all about celebrating Buffalo. It’s like a 24/7 tailgate—but with more books and less jumping through tables.
