A decade later, All weekend long
When I returned unexpectedly to Buffalo in 2006, there was no Canalside. Our waterfront was rubble - literally. There was not a kayak to be seen on the Buffalo River. River Fest Park was still just a glimmer in Peg Overdorf's eye, and Doug Swift was still dedicating himself to the Roycroft Campus. He had yet to even dream of building RiverWorks. There was nothing along the river but a gun club and piles of debris.
The old asylum which I walked past as a child en route to Campus School was no longer a functional psychiatric facility in 2006, but a hulking, abandoned wreck. Those of us who sneaked inside saw gurneys strewn along echoing corridors with peeling paint, littered with wheelchairs and other medical detritus. They hadn't even bothered to pick up after themselves, I remember thinking.
