Ashford Hollow then and now

There are so many hidden gems in Western New York. One of my favorites occupies more than 400 acres in Ashford Hollow, between Springville and Ellicottville in Cattaraugus County.

Griffis Sculpture Park has been open to the public for more than 50 years. I know this for a fact, and I can prove it. In 1969, I was honored to be "one of the leading performers appearing during the annual OctoberFest for the Ashford Hollow Foundation for the Visual and Performing Arts at Griffis Park." A photo of an embarrassingly young me in the Courier Express is the only keepsake I have of this life-altering experience, but I will never forget sitting on a stool on a hill in the Park with hundreds of people listening to me try to read my poems as the wind whipped the pages and roared in the microphone. I was all of 16. I instantly became a poet, at least in my own eyes!

This was the gift that Rod and Larry Griffis, Jr. gave me. They had taken over the Studio Arena Theatre's building on Lafayette and Hoyt to open the Courtyard Theatre. Three of us from Mount Saint Joe's volunteered, ushering, helping with set construction, and other behind-the-scenes tasks. A frustrated thespian, it got me close to the stage, although I don't believe I ever got up the courage to actually perform. In lieu of that, the amazing Griffis brothers found a way to give a shy, young writer a huge break.

That was nearly 50 years ago. I make an annual pilgrimage to Griffis Sculpture Park to honor that gift and to remember those who have given so much to our community. This Sunday is a perfect opportunity. Consider taking a beautiful drive to a lovely place to enjoy the Griffis Sculpture Park Summer Festival

If you can't get to Ashford Hollow yourself, click here to take a delightful virtual stroll through Griffis Sculpture Park with I'Jaz Eberhardt, who is not much older than I was when this gem changed my life.
