The twain shall meet - in Buffalo

There are few events more nostalgic and small town than the Erie County Fair. Ginormous 4H hogs lolling in stalls, a properly sleazy midway, the scent of cotton candy, corn dogs and deep-fried everything under the sun. Just walking through the gates makes you feel like you're somewhere in the midwest, surrounded by acres of corn fields. It's a paean to Buffalo's agricultural, small town past—and present—and a heck of a lot of fun, by golly. This annual extravaganza started on Aug 9 and continues through Aug 18.

Turn that coin over and you'll find Stations: Response Festival which starts tonight and spans two weekends, ending on August 19. This site-specific multimedia installation designed for Silo City by Torn Space Theater's Dan Shanahan and Melissa Meola, is the polar opposite of the Fair. It is urban, cool, techy and totally amazing. Local and international artists, technicians, and performers are creating a visceral and otherworldly experience, swathing audiences in sound, light, and projection. Kind of like the Fair, yet totally unlike the Fair. And it intentionally takes place in the heart of Buffalo's historic past.

These juxtapositions, and the concurrence of the two events, illustrate what makes me consider Buffalo so rich. You can stop by Wiechec's for a fish fry on Friday, and savor world class cuisine at Las Puertas on Saturday. The twain shall meet in the Queen City, where the past and the future co-exist quite nicely, thank you.
