Newsletter #10 - November 2016
In our last newsletter we wrote about the successful 2nd edition of the Keuris Composers Contest. Part of this contest was the possibility to publish a piece with Edition MatchingArts. During the summer we received many beautiful compositions, for both youth orchestra and piano trio, by the selected composers. The first piece is now available in the webshop: ‘Flight of Icarus’ by Jack Stone, who is also featured in this newsletter's intermezzo. All selected compositions will be published in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on the website!
As the name already suggests: MatchingArts Collective is a collective! Therefore we would like to feature your compositions, concerts, concert reviews and other content in our newsletter. Every month we pick out some of your events and highlight them in our newsletter and on our Facebook page. Other content can be send to us by email.

Intermezzo
Every month we'll put one of the MatchingArts members in the spotlight and tell you something about them.
Intermezzo with Jack Stone
Jack Stone’s composition ‘Flight of Icarus’ won the 1st prize of the 2nd Keuris Composers Contest in the category Chamber Music.
‘'Flight of Icarus' is a programmatic work for Clarinet, Cello and Piano that is based on the ancient Greek myth of how Icarus and Daedalus managed to escape from King Minos, using wings fashioned out of birds' feathers. I chose to mainly use the Phyrigian mode in this composition, which challenged me to find different ways of creating drama and excitement (other than changes in harmony). In the end, the two main devices I used were rhythm and timbre, in order to provide momentum throughout the piece.’
One of Jack's main influences in composing are the works by Greek composer John Psathas. ‘His compositional style is almost impossible to describe due to him having drawn from an amalgamation of varied sources for inspiration: The improvisational and harmonic qualities of jazz music combined with the rhythmic propulsion of rock music, supply his already conventionally-grounded composition technique with a greater palette choice. He unashamedly embraces the use of tonal phrases and harmonies, and minimalist tendencies can be seen in the vastly extended and repetitive textures found in his compositions. What appeals to me the most, though, is his integration of Eastern European and Middle Eastern melodic, harmonic and rhythmic qualities into his compositions.’

Encore!
This summer, pianist and composer Daan van den Hurk released his new cd “Allerlei Fantasieën” (‘”All Sorts of Fantasies”) under MatchingArts Records. To create the feeling that your not listening to a cd, or even to a concert, but to someone just playing for himself in the attic, this cd is recorded on a small unrevised 1924 Schiedmayer grand piano in the recording studio of Het Muziekpand, Berkel en Rodenrijs, with all the little imperfections unedited. With a unqiue program of music by the pianist himself, Anne-Maartje Lemereis, Franz Liszt and Maurice Ravel, the result is an intimate, but very lifelike, vulnerable and personal recording, with a tension span from the first to the last note.
