BACPS Spring Meeting

Time: 2:00 - 4:30 pm
Location: UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley in the Conference Center next to the Tropical House
Program: Pitcher Plant Trade & Division workshop and Elections

Join us for our spring meeting at the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens! We will be holding general elections at the meeting. If you are interested in running for a position, you must submit a brief candidacy statement by February 17th. Below are descriptions of the officer duties. Members must be in good standing in order to run for office. Please submit your candidacy statements through the contact form on our website located here: https://www.bacps.org

In addition to the officer election, we will be having a plant division workshop. Join us and bring your extra Sarracenia divisions and Nepenthes cuttings to trade! Not sure what to do? Learn at our workshop how to properly divide Sarracenia and take Nepenthes cuttings and root them. Bring any plants that need to be divided, and consider sharing or trading some divisions with others!

Go to the BACPS Facebook Group Page to tell people what you wish for and have to trade! Selling is OK too but we encourage the more fun of trading! Here is the link to the BACPS Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BACPS/

BACPS members will not have to pay entrance fee for the botanical gardens. Let the kiosk staff know that you are here for the BACPS meeting. Limited parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the Botanical Garden ($1 per hour). Carpooling or alternate transportation is encouraged.

Minutes from the Winter 2019 meeting

Recorded by Rebecca Robinson

At the BACPS Winter meeting we had a panel discussion on the history of the BACPS. The panel was made up of some of the founding members of the BACPS including Joe Mazrimas, Larry Logoteta, Peter D’Amato, Chuck Powell, and Carl Wong.

The BACPS started as a group with yearly meetings at various people’s houses in 1987. Later, in 1991, the group shifted to quarterly meetings that were held at a schoolroom in Alameda.

The initial positions of the BACPS were:
                President: Carl Wong
                Vice President: Chuck Powell
                Secretary: Larry Logoteta
                Treasurer: Joe Mazrimas
                Newsletters: Geoff Wong
                Auctioneer: Peter D’Amato

Initially the focus of the BACPS meetings was selling plants (many plants were not available then) and meeting with people of similar interests. For the first four years, the group was called the Northern California Carnivorous Plant Society. The name was later changed to the BACPS when the group switched to quarterly meetings. The BACPS Darlingtonia logo was designed by Alan Lee which were put on t-shirts and sold at the meetings.

After the panel discussion, Pablo said Thank You to the panel for their input and for the big impact they have had on the carnivorous plant hobby. Pablo then, on the behalf of the BACPS, awarded Joe Mazrimas with a Lifetime Achievement award for his huge contribution to the carnivorous plant hobby. Joe wrote early ICPS newsletters and did a lot of work in learning the conditions to best grow a wide variety of CP’s.

Thank you for the donations to the raffle! Our raffle included 3 signed watercolors, 7 Pinguicula, 1 Utricularia and 1 Drosera.

Thanks all for sharing!

-Rebecca Robinson, BACPS Secretary
