These are certainly extraordinary times and as of this writing events and recommendations on staying healthy and not spreading the Coronavirus are changing almost hourly. At this moment we are going to go ahead and plan the spring meeting with the assumption that it might be canceled.  If we are able to hold the meeting on April 18th, everyone will be asked to take the appropriate precautions, which may include not attending if you are in a higher risk group.

The Annual Show & Sale is a long ways off and there is no way we can foresee what the environment will be. Right now I think and hope it will not be impacted.

For now, everyone stay safe and let's keep in contact on the BACPS Facebook page. I think that everyone will enjoy seeing your spring plants, exchange greetings and set up trades for the next time we all get together.

Hope you are all healthy and safe!

Stephen

Maggie Chen, with Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts spoke at our February 15, 2020 meeting at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. She has over 200 venus fly trap cultivars and gave us growing tips highlighting what conditions give her the best success in Southern California.

  1. Light - 4 hours direct. 12 hour photoperiod

  2. Location - Facing South, East, or West. As high as 90F.

  3. Water - Roots can be wet, but not rhizomes. TDS <20, 6-8” pot ideally

  4. Media - LFS ⅔, perlite or pumice ⅓, wrap rhizome in LFS, place in hole in perlite/LFS/peat mix. Bottom 2” is LFS

  5. Heat - 40-95 F, over 90F, put a shade cloth up

  6. Container - plastic and white to deflect heat, plant at least 2” from side of pot

Dormancy - Oct, Nov, Dec. Cut dead leaves and anything black off.
If you plant rhizomes 1" apart, they will stress enough to make more rhizomes.

All the beautiful pictures of Venus Fly Traps in this newsletter were shared by Maggie during her presentation. She also posted the pictures on our Facebook page.
