Your world of opportunity
What to do when they say tell me about yourself
"Tell me about yourself" it’s a common interview question and it’s a tough one because, for many people, it is not clear what is being asked. Obviously the interviewers are not asking about your private life, and the question should not be confused with “What makes you a good fit for this role?” The motivation behind this type of question during an interview is to test your ability to see what is relevant to the role.

You may hear this same question in other contexts too. For example a fellow conference attendee may approach you during a session break and use it as a form of introduction or, you share a lift with another delegate who turns out to be a director of research and is interested in considering you for a position.

Yet it really isn't a question, it is also a phrase; so how do you answer?
