content warning: violence, oppression

Dear Markaz community,

As a center that exists to support a diverse community of students, including those of Palestinian heritage, the Markaz acknowledges and unequivocally condemns the ongoing violence and human rights violations occurring in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.

In the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, Palestinians continue to rightfully resist attempts to forcibly expel them from their homes. On the last Friday of Ramadan, Israeli police forces stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque and fired tear gas and live ammunition at peaceful worshipers. Ongoing shelling and aerial bombing in Gaza has left 48 Palestinians dead - 14 of whom were children - and hundreds wounded. We recognize that these aggressions are part of a history of oppression against Palestinian people, who have resisted violence, displacement, and erasure for generations. The Palestinian members of our community have asked that, as allies, we listen to Palestinian leaders, educate ourselves on the context of this current moment, and also uplift the beauty of Palestinian culture.

As Eid approaches, we know that this is a difficult time for Palestinian students, staff, and faculty, who should be completing midterms and celebrating at the end of Ramadan with loved ones. We see you and we are grieving with you. We are here to offer you whatever support we can.

At a time like this, we also know that campus discourse can become challenging. We encourage students to review the Fundamental Standard while engaging in conversations and/or activism online and in person. We also encourage students to prioritize self-care and to be mindful of their capacity as they engage. Below are some helpful campus resources:

Once again, we wholeheartedly affirm our commitment to supporting Palestinian students and allies during this time. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

With solidarity and compassion,

The Markaz Resource Center
