South St. Paul’s John Deneen named National Merit Semifinalist

South St. Paul Public Schools (SSPPS) is pleased to announce that John Deneen, SSP Secondary senior, has been named a 2020 National Merit Semifinalist. Deneen, who last year earned a perfect score of 36 on his ACT, is among an elite group students from across the country earning the Semifinalist distinction. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that oversees the scholarship program, less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors qualify for the distinction.

SSPPS seeks community representative to serve on the Central Square Community Center Advisory Board

South St. Paul Public Schools is accepting applications for community members interested in serving as a school district representative on the Central Square Community Center (CSCC) Advisory Board. The position is a 3-year term beginning in November of 2019.

September 19 Board Discussions:
 

COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE MEETING

PRELIMINARY TAX LEVY - The Board will discuss the district’s preliminary levy, an annual process that required districts to approve a preliminary tax levy by Sept. 30, with formal approval set for December. Property owners will receive their property tax statements in late November. 

PUBLIC LISTENING SESSIONS - The Board will continue its discussion of ways to enhance public listening sessions in order to increase community engagement. 

REGULAR MEETING

  • QUALITY IN ACTION PRESENTATION: The Board will hear from staff at Kaposia Education Center on the progress of their implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a framework that assists schools in identifying and implementing research-based behavioral interventions in an effort to improve social and academic outcomes for all students. It is based on the idea that students learn appropriate behavior through instruction, practice, feedback, and encouragement. Kaposia is in its fourth year of implementation of the PBIS program. Lincoln Center and SSP Secondary are in year two of implementation.

September 19 Board Action:

In addition to regular business items, the Board plans to take action on the following items: 

  • 2019 PAYABLE 2020 PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX LEVY - The Board is scheduled to vote on the preliminary tax levy. The final levy will be certified in December. 

  • 2020 CENTRAL SQUARE COMMUNITY CENTER OPERATING BUDGET - The Board is scheduled to vote on the 2020 Central Square Operating Budget as presented.

Parent Resource: E-cigarette 
Awareness Among Youth


Parents, school staff, law enforcement, health professionals and others who work with youth to attend this event which provides educational and preventive measures to address the use of e-cigarettes among youth. Doors open with resources available at 6:15 p.m.

Dr. Sherri Katz, assistant professor of Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota

Parent Resource: Super Saturday Parent Education Conference

Join the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for a FREE parent education conference on Saturday, October 5 at Eagan High School. This event is designed to meet the needs of biological, foster and adoptive parents, family members, paraprofessionals, and others who work with or care for children with and without a mental health diagnosis.

Breakout sessions include:

  • Managing challenging behaviors
  • Special Education
  • Trauma
  • Mindfulness for youth
  • Family communication strategies
  • Suicide prevention

Community Education Programs

Do you have children who enjoys drawing? The SSP Community Ed Youth Enrichment program is offering drawing classes to students age 5-12.

In this introductory drawing class, students will learn basic techniques and principles of drawing as we create puppies, ponies, people, and more. They will master a simple step-by-step method that is essential to creating memorable drawings. Each student will receive their own take-home How to Draw booklet!
