Heartburn? Medication Free Options

If you suffer from frequent heartburn you may have gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD . This condition occurs when stomach acid splashes back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest and neck areas. It can also cause nausea, coughing, belching, a bitter taste, the feeling of a lump in the throat or respiratory problems.
Diet, stress, and smoking can all trigger or worsen symptoms.
The classic medications for managing GERD have significant long-term side effects. If you need one, aim for short-term use only to promote healing.

To naturally treat GERD to prevent or lessen the need for medications try the following:
  1. Consider digestive enzymes. Partially digested food irritates the GI tract. I can determine which enzymes are most appropriate based on your symptoms.
  2. Baking soda is a good treatment for immediate reliefCombine 1/2 teaspoon with 4-ounces of room temperature water. Sip this drink slowly [drinking to fast can cause gas]. You can repeat every two hours
  3. Eat small meals and avoid eating after 8pm.
  4. Maintain a healthy weight.
  5. Avoid lying down for at least 2 hours after eating.
  6. Practice relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises.
  7. Sip chamomile, ginger, or mint tea. It can help soothe the esophagus.
  8. Try sleeping on your left side. This may help move acid away from the entrance of the esophagus.
