Dear JCRC Friends and Supporters:

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) believes that our strong democratic and civil society deserves vigilant protection. Protecting democratic freedoms, developing peaceful relationships among Americans, promoting mutual respect, fostering understanding and celebrating diversity are values our Bay Area Jewish community cherishes and defends. By contrast, extremist statements that amplify hate and drive divisions in this country put all minority populations, including ours, at risk.

For this reason, JCRC unequivocally condemns the appointment of Stephen Bannon to the position of senior counselor and chief strategist in President-elect Trump’s Administration. Bannon has described himself as being engaged in “a growing global anti-establishment revolt” which should “turn on the hate.” As executive chairman of Breitbart News Network from 2012 to 2016, he oversaw the online publication’s shift to the alt-right and its promotion of anti-Semitic, racist, extremist and misogynistic voices. We must vigorously oppose the appointment to national office of any person who takes pride in the rhetoric of hatred or works to ostracize women and racial, ethnic and religious minority groups.

It’s no coincidence that we’re seeing an alarming increase in race-based attacks and anti-Semitic incidents in California and across the nation. The Southern Poverty Law Center has recorded hundreds of incidents since Election Day. This surge in violence and vandalism underscores the threat to civil society in the United States. President-elect Trump has urged followers to stop harassing minorities. Given that some of his supporters have taken his inflammatory campaign rhetoric as license, it is imperative that he use his new platform to make clear his vigorous opposition to any hate-motivated activities and acts of violence.

JCRC thanks California and local government leaders and the myriad of ethnic and faith community leaders who have pledged to safeguard our pluralistic society. The antidote to this current denigration of tolerance is to fight for our values of justice and compassion, and to redouble our engagement in the democratic process.
