A brave girl’s journey

Six-year-old Dieu huddled between her parents on a motorbike and embarked on a 3-hour journey from her rural village to Can Tho province in Vietnam in hopes of getting “brighter” eyes.

Through the massive hustling traffic and honking of scooters, they arrived at Orbis's Flying Eye Hospital.

Like typical families living in low and middle-income countries, Dieu’s father is a rice farmer and her mother works long hours in a factory. Saving up for Dieu’s medical fees means she might have to give up on school.

Dr Asim Ali, a paediatric ophthalmologist from our Volunteer Faculty, diagnosed Dieu with cataract (cloudy lens) in her left eye and strabismus (misaligned right eye) as a consequence of her cataract.

The day for Dieu to receive her cataract surgery came. Little Dieu was nervous. She’s never been on a plane, let alone on a hospital plane. But she had no reason to worry, her operation was a success!  The surgery was also screened live to medical professionals all over the world.

Dieu now diligently exercises to strengthen her eye muscles in order to correct her strabismus. Her doctors at Can Tho Eye Hospital are monitoring her progress and developing a treatment plan for her.

This is my only child and I have always dreamed of a good future for her. I am very happy that she can play with her friends now,” said Nha, Dieu’s mother, through a translator.
