Celebrate summer with light fresh aquatic tones.

The cool refreshing tones of white, aqua and pale to mid blues are the perfect antidote to the hot days of summer. Some of our most classic 'summer' locations are also defined by this colour palette of crisp white walls with pops of ocean blue. White is often used in summer to help reduce the heat, as a colour it reflects the light and heat back so it keeps the surface cooler - unlike black that absorbs the light and heat.

Bubble Party

For Aiden's Birthday I created a party inspired by bubbles. If you look at bubbles drifting they have a beautiful lustrous sheen to them and you can pick up on hints of pink, purple and yellow tones but I chose to limit the colour palette to just aqua and blue. By applying a strict aquatic style palette to the party I was able to enhance the feeling of freshness and lightness.

The key decorative feature of this party was a backdrop of hand painted watercolour bubbles strung on lines of clear fishing line so that they would float suspended.

Coastal Baby Shower

For this coastal baby shower styled by The Sweetest Celebration and photographed by Thousand Fold Photography I supplied some beautiful hand painted watercolour shells. This event also uses a light aquatic colour palette that is perfect for summer entertaining. Set up as a relaxed and elegant picnic by the beach the event is a calming and peaceful reflection of summer entertaining.

One of the key elements to create this look is the layering of different coloured glass. Clear glass plates are mixed with blue tumblers and aqua goblets.

In regards to colour it is a strict colour palette - white, blue and aqua but within those colours there is a lot of variety and this look is best when you incorporate the full spectrum of colours within that palette. If you only choose one shade of blue and white then your event would have a very different aesthetic and will look more nautical and artificial rather than coastal and organic.
A layer of light blue material is softly draped over the table to mimic the folds of the ocean. The watercolour seashells enhance this effect.
A large glass jar filled with sand and watercolour seashells with a rope handle and tea light candle makes a strong oceanic statement.
