Climate data and tutorials, digital conferencing, and Twitter charts

Happy February! Here are our data journalism bookmarks from the past week. Do drop us an e-mail if you have done clever data work that could inspire others. We would love to feature it here.

Climate data to keep an eye on

We, at J++ and Newsworthy, intend to make 2021 a year of data-driven climate journalism. In our research on data points to monitor we found this list in a report from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency very helpful:

These indicators represent almost all of our consumption-based emissions in Sweden. In other words, these are the indicators that we – as data journalists – should keep an eye on if we want to understand our progress towards sustainability:
  • Passenger cars – fuels, mileage and emissions
  • Flights
  • Food consumption (especially meat)
  • Construction and heating
  • Consumption of cloaths and other textiles.

The articles are written in Swedish:

Conference in the cloud

The pandemic has effectively canceled all the conferences we have gotten used to attend for inspiration. On the other hand there is a greater supply of online alternatives.
Last week the Canadien data journalism conference "Data Driven" was arranged digitally. There are now hours of lectures available for viewing online.

Chart Mondays

Richard Öhrvall has made an attempt to restart the Twitter hashtag #grafmåndag ("chart Monday") which was active a couple of years ago. Contribute your work or get inspired by others!
