2021-06-01 | J++ Newsletter #113

Smart visualisations, in a broad sense, are the theme of this week’s newsletter.

First off, Swedish public broadcaster SVT has put together a game of life-sim, corona-style, exploring and explaining the concept of herd immunity (available in Swedish and English).

A simple but clever visualisation by Jason Norwood-Young compares rapes in South Africa to the number of convictions.

The UK’s Office for National Statistics has delved into scrollytelling and produced something of a model example of the genre, explaining inequality and income gaps at neighbourhood level.

From some resource-intensive examples to something altogether simpler, we always enjoy a good emoji viz. Here’s one tracking the Swedish vaccine rollout

Finally, this graphic from the Guardian neatly illustrates the issue of everyone thinking they’re middle class, in an article analysing German voters.

And last but not least…

For those of you who just can’t get enough of Eurovision, this Twitter thread analyses what makes a winning song (and why the UK never can catch a break!).
