Corona journalism and algorithm investigation

This week's newsletter is (almost) all about corona journalism but also about automated decisions-making in municipalities and how we found accidentally exposed personal data in an algorithm.

Corona, corona, corona

The corona effect
We still don't know how much corona quarantine will affect different parts in society but here are some stories on how it already has affected house sales and traveling, by Financial Times:

How to NOT cover corona
We usually describe how we did our reporting but here's a thread worthy reading for (data) journalists covering coronavirus. Haluka Maier-Borst shares his thoughts on why he decided NOT to visualize epidemic data: https://twitter.com/halukamb/status/1240174375355244545

Callout for collaborative corona-reporting
The Pulitzer center, an organisation that supports global journalism, is seeking projects that cover the corona crisis collaboratively.
They are looking for proposals that: “Focus on the systemic issues underlying the coronavirus crisis, use data & interdisciplinary approaches and hold the powerful accountable.”

Investigating algorithmic decision-making

At J++, we just did a write-up on algorithm based decision making in Swedish municipalities for Algorithm Watch. We read through 130,000 rows of code, and found accidentally exposed personal data of hundreds in the process:
