Inspiration

Libereco (a German–Swiss humans rights NGO) offered a fine example of the power of building your own databases last month, when they put all ads in the Belarusian state television broadcasts during one week (avilable online) into a Google Sheets document, to find out which western companies contribute most money to the dictatorship's propaganda channel.

Events

If you are near London this week, you might want to check out and be inspired at Peckham Digital, a creative computing festival taking place (IRL!) this upcoming weekend. Tickets are limited, but free.

In Sweden? There are still tickets available for Gräv, the Swedish Association of Investigative Journalism's annual conference, that will feature a data track. The conference takes place in Borås over the weekend, mostly in Swedish.

At J++ / Newsworthy

As of this week, Martin Olsson and Gustav Gatu join our team in Sweden to work with Newsworthy, a service for local, datadriven news. Martin Olsson, formerly head of news at the local daily Värmlands Folkblad, is our new data journalist, operating from the city of Karlstad; whereas Gustav Gatu, formerly at Bonnier, will be our business developer working from Malmö. While Jupyter Notebook is a very convenient way to both explore data and share your analysis, it has some serious drawbacks: Lack of testing and poor state management are two things often mentioned. Testbook addresses one of those concerns, allowing you to write clean unit tests for you Notebook code, without having to mess with the code itself.
