Mezzo Susan Graham’s 2015-16 Includes Count/Countess Double Act at the Met Opera in November and December

Susan Graham – dubbed “America’s favorite mezzo” by Gramophone – has embarked on a stellar 2015-16 season, topped by a Count/Countess double act that demonstrates the singer’s rare versatility at the Metropolitan Opera in November and December. The Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano makes her role debut as Countess Geschwitz in Alban Berg’s intense modernist masterpiece Lulu at the Metropolitan Opera, in a new production by artist-director William Kentridge (Nov 5-Dec 3). In December, Graham returns to the Met to star in the plum “trouser” role of Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss II’s sparkling operetta Die Fledermaus, which James Levine will conduct for the first time in his 45-year Met career (Dec 4-Jan 7).

Graham will celebrate New Year’s Eve with the New York Philharmonic, performing in a “La Vie Parisienne” program seemingly tailor-made for an artist awarded the “Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur” for her skill interpreting French music. She will appear twice at Carnegie Hall this season: on April 7 with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s (singing a signature aria, Purcell’s moving “Dido’s Lament”) and on May 12 with a special “Susan Graham & Friends” concert. With repertoire ranging from Schumann to Poulenc, her recital schedule includes appearances with pianist Malcolm Martineau at London’s Wigmore Hall and Vienna’s Konzerthaus, as well as a performance in Boston’s Celebrity Series. Graham caps her season May 19-22 by singing Brahms’s Alto Rhapsody with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.
