Personal Jurisdiction Bill, Senate Bill 9
Senate Bill 9, the personal jurisdiction bill I have co-authored with Representative Amy Loudenbeck strengthens legal protections for victims of domestic abuse, child abuse, or harassment, and empowers Wisconsin law enforcement officers and courts to extend protections to these victims from abusers even if they do not live in Wisconsin. This measure provides security for victims who receive threatening or harassing messages via digital communication such as social media, email, or text. We live in a highly mobile, high-tech society and unfortunately harassment does not stop at state lines. We want to protect our citizens to the best of our ability. Victims of harassment should not have to second guess whether Wisconsin law can shield them from an abuser. This bill clarifies our current statutes and strengthens victims’ rights. Our proposal has received wide bipartisan support and will hopefully be one of the first bills Governor Walker signs into law. On February 18th, Assembly Bill 10, the companion bill to Senate Bill 9, was voted out of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety. Assembly Bill 10, has already passed on a voice vote in the Assembly and is likely to pass the Senate on Tuesday, February 24th.
