Foxconn Update- Jobs Next Year & Public Hearing in Sturtevant

On Monday, it was announced that Foxconn jobs could start appearing as early as next year. According to a report, Foxconn intends to quickly build 3 assembly plants in the area, while their main factory is under construction.
On Tuesday, I joined many area legislators and the Joint Finance Committee for the second public hearing on the Foxconn incentive bill.
The committee took over 5 hours of testimony from the public. Member of the public, administration officials, university and technical college leaders, and local government officials voiced their support and opposition to the bill. The committee learned a lot, and it was good to hear from people whose lives will be directly impacted by Foxconn. You can read more about the hearing here.
I remain supportive of the project and the bill. I anticipate we will vote on the bill during one of the first two weeks in September!

State Property Tax Eliminated

The Joint Finance Committee completely eliminated the state property tax when negotiations over the state budget continued this week. Eliminating this tax will save the average homeowner about $26 on their property tax in addition to the other property tax relief in the budget. The committee also took votes on the DNR and Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Next week, the committee will decide K-12 education funding and the capital (building) budget. The Committee plans to complete its action the first week in September, tackling Transportation, Tax Relief and the few remaining issues.

Tackling Child Exploitation and Underage Drinking

This week I held a public hearing in my committee on two of my bills protecting the public and keeping our communities safe.
Senate Bill 300 tackles a growing problem in our increasingly digital society.  Too frequently, individuals ask children for inappropriate photographs of themselves through social media, texting, and other online methods.  Current law prohibits possession and distribution of sexually explicit photos of children, but does not criminalize asking for them.  This bill makes it clear that the act of soliciting an intimate photograph of a child is a crime.  My hope is that this will be another tool for law enforcement and prosecutors to target those that target our children.
Senate Bill 202 closes a loophole in our underage drinking laws.  According to a recent court ruling, parents and other adults can dodge accountability for hosting parties where minors that are not their own children consume alcohol.  My bill would prohibit adults from knowingly allowing the consumption of alcohol by minors other than their own children.  This change should help reduce drunk driving, underage drinking, and promote responsible drinking education.
