Creating ‘Mood’ in your images.
Creating impact with your images is one of the challenges that I really enjoy about photography. To me it’s all about creating a mood and how the viewer reacts to it.

Shooting at Night.
Shooting at dusk is a great time to capture the warm feeling from night lights. Here I shot at a high ISO of 1600 and wide aperture of f3.5, 1/30sec. Daylight White Balance helped keep the golden colour of the lights, contrasting against the blue twilight sky.

The foreground stall creates a feeling of depth, coming forward from the intricate golden background. Strong diagonal lines of the facade and the human interest of the people all add up to making an interesting picture.

Location: Night market, Piazza San Marco, Venice Italy.

Twilight shooting with clouds.
Venturing out at dusk with lots of cloud around can be risky but oh-so-rewarding. At times I have had many disappointments with clouds totally blocking the sun, a real fizzer. So be persistent, going back to your chosen location many times if you need.

The dark clouds surrounding the warm clouds really pop especially against the blue sky. I am always looking for reflections on the water and this pool really ‘popped’ for me, giving a beautiful oval shape balancing against the organic shapes of the clouds above. The mellow mood is created by the warm tones and textures. The
highlights on the central cloud give a nice little lift from it being dark and depressing.
Location: Ocean Beach, Denmark WA.

Shooting when there's rain about.
Rain can always be a challenge to capture as it tends to disappear on camera, not showing up at all as the human eye sees it. Backlight from the sun in this case really highlights the rain, making it more visible (fog and smoke behave similarly).

I have converted this image to a light Magenta toned B&W to enhance the softness and magic of the overall mood. I have Photoshopped in my daughter Jessica, to create a story with some human interest and sense of scale of the trees. Some extra softness was added to mellow the whole image even more.

Location:  Denmark WA.

Moody Blue colour palette.
Shot from a high vantage point after the sun had just set, there was still enough blue light reflecting of the shallow water. A man wandered into my shot with his dog, I released the shutter after the dog had run out of the frame chasing a Seagull.

The simple colour palette with the single figure creates a sombre mood, with a highlight on the water creating a brightness, balancing that mood. That is, it’s not all dark and gloomy and there's a feeling of ‘hope’.
The compositional element of the arc with the light edge leads the viewers eye through the picture.
Location: Nanarup, Albany WA.

Using different textures & soft light.
I love textures and these tree roots really captivated me, begging to be shot. With beautiful soft clouds reflecting in the calm water I saw the opportunity to capture these strange roots, juxtaposed against the straight lines of the jetty remnants. The rough roots contrasted against the smooth water. The soft light was quite magical.

The strange thing was we learned later that this area was said to be the site of an Aboriginal massacre. Looking back at the picture again I could see what looked like skulls (the tree roots) and that spooked me quite a bit.

Location: Poison Point, Wilson Inlet, Denmark WA.
