Thanksgiving Beer Style Pairings

Check out our handy (but definitely not exhaustive) list of beer style pairings with some common and not so common Thanksgiving dishes.

Thanksgiving can be a stressful time with family coming over, the weather getting colder, and the general busy-ness of the season. Don't stress over your beer choices for Thanksgiving (or any holiday get-together), here are some great go to pairings for your Iowa Brewers Guild staff!

Saison and Turkey - Saison's wheaty, barnyardy flavors work well with turkey, and honestly all of the earthy, starchy goodness on your Thanksgiving table. This complies with the "matching flavor with flavor" style of paring.

Fruited Sour Ales and Regular Stuffing - Know how cranberries and stuffing taste awesome together? Same principle with a fruited sour, especially with a red fruit like cranberries or tart cherries. This complies with the "contrasting flavor with flavor" style of pairing.

Milk Stout and Cranberry Stuffing - Rich, velvety flavors bring out the snap in the cranberries. Chocolate and fruit compliment each other, and so do these flavors.

Pumpkin beer and EVERYTHING - This is the season of the squash. Just as yams, potatoes, and other squashes fit in well on the Thanksgiving table, so do these beers. Just don't drink one with a slice of pumpkin pie...pumpkin overload!

Porter and Sweet Potato Casserole - Also on the squash train is the comparative pairing of roasty, coffee driven porters with the sweet potato casserole - the one your grandma brings with the marshmallows. Coffee and cream, coffee and marshmallows. Same thing.

Oktoberfest and Thanksgiving Spices - Oktoberfest's nutty, malty flavor will balance well with some heavier holiday spices. Because the Oktoberfest is malty, but not necessarily sweet, it will balance spices like allspice without making the combo overwhelming.

Barleywine and Nutty Desserts - Barleywine's sweet and boozy taste will match perfectly with desserts like Pecan Pie and Bread Pudding. The desserts are both things that have a bit of bitter from nuts that will complement the sweet flavor from the higher alcohol in the barleywine.

Barrel Aged Beers and Dessert - Whiskey and desserts are made for each other. So are Barrel Aged beers and desserts. The same principle of the slightly harsh, tangy alcohol that tames the sugar works with beers that have aged in barrels, from whiskey to wine.
