The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC) Supports the Health Ministry Assessing the Economic Impact of Tobacco Control
JAMAICA MOH undertaking impact study of tobacco control
The Ministry of Health in Jamaica will be undertaking an economic impact study to assess the economics of tobacco control across the country.

Portfolio Minister, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, said the study will inform the process to adopt strong tax measures as a tobacco control strategy.
He informed that the Ministry recently engaged internationally renowned tobacco tax specialist, Dr. Corne Van Walbeek, to undertake the study. Dr. Van Walbeek had done a similar research in Jamaica in 2005. “The updated study will further guide national tobacco control policies in observance of Jamaica’s obligation under Article six (Price and Tax measures to reduce the demand for tobacco),” Dr. Ferguson said.

On the margins of the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59), the Permanent Missions of the Caribbean Community to the United Nations (CARICOM), the NCD Alliance, and Arogya World will hold a panel discussion on realizing gender equality and improving health outcomes in the post-2015 era. mHealth for Smoking Cessation Programs: A Systematic Review


mHealth transforms healthcare delivery around the world due to its affordability and right time availability. It has been used for delivery of various smoking cessation programs and interventions over the past decade. With the proliferation of smartphone usage around the world, many smartphone applications are being developed for curbing smoking among smokers. Various interventions like SMS, progress tracking, distractions, peer chats and others are being provided to users through smartphone applications. This paper presents a systematic review that analyses the applications of mobile phones in smoking cessations. Read more

The Department of Noncommunicable Diseases of the Pan American Health Organization and the American Heart Association organize this webinar as part of the activities of Salt Awareness Week 2015. There will be presented the work of AHA on salt reduction, the Regional Targets for sodium/salt reduction in food groups, recently agreed at the 3rd meeting of the Salt Smart Consortium.
