Hurricane Matthew Update

I hope you and your properties made it safely through the storm. The worst of Matthew has past. It was a nerve-wracking evening, but fortunately the winds were not as high as they could have been.

While the damage is in no way minor, I feel as though we were lucky. Our historic structures seems to have held up well. I'm sure many houses, like mine, sprung a few leaks, but nothing a few dozen towels couldn't fix.

I do know that many houses were flood damaged. If your house was flooded last year, I'd say it most definitely flooded again. The flood levels seemed a bit higher even, so I'm sure some additional houses flooded today.  The good news is that it appears the back side of the storm is now pushing the water back out. With any luck we can dry up quickly.

There are a few trees down, but overall the trees seem intact. Mostly the crepe myrtles seem to have fared the worst. It is still blowing and the soil is very wet, so I imagine we could loose a few more.

We are very thankful for the strong leadership and response by the city of Charleston, the state of South Carolina, and most of all the residents for helping to prepare Charleston. These efforts greatly helped to reduce the damage.

Later today the cleanup begins. I remain hopeful that Charleston will be up and running smoothly in a few days and that we will be able to resume the 40th Annual Fall Tours, Lunch Lecture Series, and Up Close and Personal activities. For those looking to get out of the house, please consider joining us.

The Preservation Society will be hard at work assisting residents and business owners in recovering from this storm. We hope that business can resume as soon as possible. Let's work together, as a community, rebound quickly, and once again demonstrate Charleston's inimitable resiliency.

Hope you are all well,

Kristopher B. King
