Superhero training with Batman, a trip to the Senior Center, a visit from the Grant County Canine Unit, a puppet show with Charlie Corpuscle...the library is the place to be this summer. Come hang out with all the cool kids in town and check out what we have coming up for August.
How's your summer reading going? If you've made it halfway to your goal (25 books for ages 3-6 and 500 pages for ages 7-11), make sure to stop in for your Ka-POW ticket.

Children's summer reading logs are due back to the library on August 28. Everyone who completes the summer reading goal (50 books for ages 3-6 and 1000 pages for ages 7-11) will get a book and a prize bag at the final party on September 3rd.
Looking for something to do with the kids in August? We have a different drop-in program each week. Children ages 6 and under need to come with an adult (16+).
  • Block Party - Monday, August 3, 1-3 pm - Drop in for some LEGO fun.
  • Read-a-thon - Saturday, August 8, 1-4 pm - Drop in to participate in our Read-a-thon.
  • Play-paloozaTuesday, August 11, 9:30-10:30 am - Drop in to enjoy playtime, toys, puzzles, puppets and more.
  • Epic Engineering - Wednesday, August 19, 10am-12pm - Drop in to create some towers, airplanes, and more.
We've been building towers, stamping scarves, creating with the handyperson's "secret weapon" and more this summer - and we're not done yet. Weekly teen programs run through August. Upcoming programs include Henna Disguise (August 5), Project Runway: Heroes & Villains (August 12), and Life Sized Clue (August 19). Stop by the library or call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up.

If you've finished your
Super Summer Reading Record, it can be turned in for a book, a magnet, and prize drawing tickets. The last day to turn in Reading Records is August 22
Join us for nine holes of mini-golf at Platteville's newest golf course, built inside the library by our fantastic teens. Call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up. Children ages 5-11 must be accompanied by someone 18 or older.
Combining archival photographs with documented narrative, Mr. Hibbard provides a window into Platteville's 175 year past and its significant role in the development of Southwest Wisconsin. No registration needed. Here's a testimonial from our own Dan at the Reference Desk: For someone who spends most of his time in the basement of the Southwest Room with university archives and old manuscripts, Mr. Hibbard is funnier than you might think.
Our henna programs involve you doodling on your skin with a plant-based paste, leaving your skin dyed with a rich, brown design. No matter what you draw, it always looks good (and if it doesn't, the designs fade in about 1-2 weeks anyway). Call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up. For ages 18+ (teen henna will be held in the afternoon)
See, sample, and talk about fruits and vegetables of many different colors. Find out how these super good foods benefit you. Driftless Market of Platteville will be here with an array of colorful produce.
Presented by
Driftless Market, held at the Platteville Public Library. No registration required.
Super Summer Saturday Shows
August 15, 9:30 am, 12:15 pm and 3:15 pm
It's a Iron Man movie marathon - come for one or all three. Our last movie marathon featured a tornado warning - we're hoping that the movies will be the most exciting part of this showing! Movie snacks are provided or bring your own favorite treat. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Questions? Call 348-7441 ext 4.
In Stitches
August 17, 6:00 - 7:30 pm (third Monday of the month)
Join us for crafting, chatting, and cookies at the library. You bring your own project, we'll bring refreshments. All kinds of portable craft projects welcome. Ages 12 - adult. Come when you can, leave when you have to.
Have you finished your bingo card? Now is the time to bring them in - our selection of magnet prizes has been recently restocked thanks to one of our fantastic teen volunteers. The last day to turn in bingo cards is Saturday, August 22
Game Night: Bunco
August 24, 6:00 - 7:30 pm
We had a good time playing Kubb in July, but that game required the ability to both throw and aim. In August, we're learning how to play Bunco - a game that only requires the ability to toss dice (and maybe a tiny bit of adding). Call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up. For ages 12 - adult.
What could be better than sitting out in the sun with a book (besides sitting next to a fireplace with a book...or out in the fall leaves with a book...or listening to spring birds with a book...)? Here are some of the books and shows we've been enjoying this summer...but you don't have to take our word for it!
  • Miss Fisher and ANZAC GirlsWho knew Australia produced such quality television? It's a good thing too, since I've run out of BBC stuff to watch. -Lydia
  • I think one of the best newer DVDs we have gotten would be Selma.  Historic, suspenseful, and filled with excellent acting. -Erin
  • Bird Box was one scary book!! -Leanne
  • Day Shift by Charlaine Harris is a fun read, second in a series after Midnight Crossroad. Look for characters you know from her Sookie Stackhouse books to show up in this small Texas town of interesting people. -Nancy
  • If you need 100 pep talks, read Kid President's Guide to Being Awesome. This book will inspire you and make you want to love people. This book is for everybody. -Karina
  • If your summer is in need of a crassly hilarious and very weird book about teen boys and giant bugs who are only interested in eating and mating, try Grasshopper Jungle. This book is most definitely not for everybody! -Karina

If you missed Library Trivia Night, you missed out on a great time complete with costumes and cupcakes. We're already picking a date for next year, and we could use your advice. Please help us by taking a short survey (5 minutes, tops) to let us know what times and dates work best for our Platteville area trivia lovers.
Dine out at Benvenuto's on the third Thursday of the month, mention the library, and a portion of your bill will go to the Platteville Library Foundation. Upcoming dates are August 20, September 17, and October 15.
