Platteville Public Library Newsletter: Volume 1, Issue 3
To the bookmobile, SuperReaders!
View this email in your browser
This summer has been filled with superheroes and super readers. We had a great time with everyone who came to the library to help us "Celebrate America with Captain America" (and with Uncle Sam and with cake).

Word on the street is that
Batman and Robin will be making an appearance at the Platteville Armory later this month. Keep your eye out for the Bat Signal (or better yet, read the rest of the newsletter to find out more).
Join us at the Platteville Armory (475 N Water St) for an afternoon of Super Hero Training and special guest appearances by Batman and Robin.
Weekly storytimes end the last week of July, but that doesn't mean summertime is over at the library! Keep reading and filling up those reading logs through August 28.

Are you
half-way to your reading goal yet? Make sure to stop by the library with your reading log to get your half-way KA-POW prize drawing ticket.

Watch for our weekly
drop-in programs this August. We'll kick off with a Block Party on August 3 from 1-3 pm. Drop-in and have some LEGO fun. Children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Weekly teen programs are just getting started. Upcoming programs include Stamp of Approval (July 15), Fandom Frenzy (July 22), Super Skyscrapers (July 29), and Henna Disguise (August 5). Stop by the library or call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up.

If you've already finished your
Super Summer Reading Record, it can be turned in for a book, a prize, and prize drawing tickets. Reading Records are available at the library if you haven't picked one up yet.
It's almost trivia time: have you assembled your super trivia team?
This year's theme is "heroes" - expect that theme to be very loosely interpreted. Call us at 348-7441 ext 4 or use our
online form to sign up. If you don't have a team, we'll match you up with some new friends to form your own team of Super Trivia Avengers. In addition to fun times, a mental workout, and the chance to win library bragging rights, there will also be cupcakes.
How can someone link Johnny Depp's take on a Disney park ride to the annals of ancient Roman Drama? If anyone can do it and make it interesting to boot, it's Amber. Come find out how it's done, and learn along the way how some ideas of the hero in the modern world have well-established roots in the past (and how those long-ago toga-wearing folk laughed at some of the same jokes we do!). Open to all, no registration needed.
Super Summer Saturday Shows
July 18, 9:30 am, 12:15 pm and 3:15 pm
It's a Batman movie marathon - come for one or all three! Movie snacks are provided or bring your own favorite treat. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Questions? Call 348-7441 ext 4.
In Stitches
July 20, 6:00 - 7:30 pm (third Monday of the month)
Join us for crafting, chatting, and cookies at the library. You bring your own project, we'll bring refreshments. All kinds of portable craft projects welcome. Ages 12 - adult. Come when you can, leave when you have to.
Join us for nine holes of mini-golf at Platteville's newest golf course, built inside the library by our fantastic teens. Call us at 348-7441 ext 4 to sign up. Children ages 5-11 must be accompanied by someone 18 or older.

Teens: not only can you sign up to play golf, but you can also sign up to help
build the golf course on Saturday night. Call us or stop by the reference desk to sign up and get your after-hours permission slip.
Platteville Stories with James Hibbard
Monday, August 3, 6:00 - 7:00 pm
Presenting archival photographs with documented narrative, Mr. Hibbard provides a window into Platteville's 175 year past and its significant role in the development of Southwest Wisconsin. Here's a testimonial from our own Dan at the Reference Desk: For someone who spends most of his time in the basement of the Southwest Room with university archives and old manuscripts, Mr. Hibbard is funnier than you might think.
After seven years of teen henna programs, we're adding one for the adults, too. Our henna programs involve you doodling on your skin with a plant-based paste, leaving your skin dyed with a rich, brown design. Here are five true facts about henna that you should know:
  1. It's very fun, easy, and relaxing.
  2. No matter what you draw, it will look impressive to all your friends.
  3. If for some reason you don't love your design, it will fade in about two weeks.
  4. If you do love your design (of course you will), it will still fade in about two weeks.
  5. If you want to sign up, you should call the library at 348-7441 ext 4.
See, sample, and talk about fruits and vegetables of many different colors. Find out how these super good foods benefit you. Driftless Market of Platteville will be here with an array of colorful produce.
Presented by
Driftless Market, held at the Platteville Public Library. No registration required.

Have you ever read a book where the characters seem so real that you think they might just pop out and start asking for library cards? Or maybe you recently spotted Mary Poppins visiting the library to promote the Heartland Festival shows. Either way, it's making us happy.
Have you taken any pictures this summer with our superhero cutout, with Dobby, or at a library program? We'd love to see them! Tag us online with #SuperSummerReading, #PlattevillePublicLibrary, or #DapperDobby.
Dine out at Benvenuto's on the third Thursday of the month, mention the library, and a portion of your bill will go to the Platteville Library Foundation. Upcoming dates are July 16, August 20, and September 17.
