Tell the Council Your Story

SEAGO works to get the best regulations and management for the charter and guided fishing sector, and we need you to join your voice with ours on an important issue.  The North Pacific Fishery Management Council ("Council") just released its Schedule and Agenda for December's meeting and the Halibut Recreational Quota Entity ("RQE") is at the top of the list.

The Council will accept public comment on the RQE through Tuesday, November 29th, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.  Letters can be sent via e-mail to: npfmc.comments@noaa.gov

The current Catch Sharing Plan allots only 18.3% of the halibut catch in Southeast to charter fishing.  With the low overall catch allowed, this has led to extremely reduced, ever changing, regulations.  The CSP raises questions about fairness in allocations, and risks marginalizing anglers and charter operators.
The RQE would purchase halibut quota shares to increase that 18.3% allocation, and spread the benefit across 2C operators via less stringent regulations for their clients.  The RQE breathes life into Alaska sportfish tourism opportunities using a new, creative program brought forth by our sector.
The RQE 's journey has been a long one, showing the Council that our industry will stand together to obtain management and regulations which benefit our businesses and clients.  Comment and make sure the Council knows that by implementing this program effectively, they help bring Alaska more:
  • Jobs in the fishing industry and related administrative work;
  • Revenue via local and borough sales taxes, bed taxes, fish box taxes, transportation rental taxes, and even property taxes;
  • Jobs and revenue via local purchases of meals, alcohol, gifts, tackle, bait, fuel, and more;
  • Revenue via local and State Business Licenses
  • Revenue via Saltwater Operator and Guide Licenses
  • Revenue via Fishing Licenses
