Would you describe your summer as transformative? Life-changing? Stretching? Do you feel like God spoke to you?
We sure do! God did all these things and more this past summer here at the base of Mount Monadnock. Teens and youth from all across New England were challenged to reawaken to the call of Gospel whether for the first time or the hundredth time. We often think the Gospel is just for the lost, but with every retreat and program we hold, I am reminded more and more how much I need the Gospel to continue to change and conform me to his image.
We had an amazing group of summer staff who served and grew in amazing ways. It was awesome to watch how close they grew in community, as well as in their faith. I know Millennials can get a bad rap when it comes to work ethic, but I have a very different picture. They were hard-working, but more importantly they love the Lord and are willing to be used by Him wherever they are called. Please pray for many of them as they head back to school and college.
I had two major takeaways from the summer:
Brokenness - it is everywhere. Our world and culture offer counterfeits to the Gospel that promise fulfillment such as drugs, pornography, addictions, loneliness, anger, etc. I heard and saw first hand the destruction and pain of broken families, schools, friendships, identities, gender, etc. At times, I was at a loss, just offering an ear or shoulder to process what was going on in their lives and to point them to the God who can heal all. Honestly, the only way to counter the brokenness of this world is to create a safe enough place for them to open up their heart and souls in a loving community who just keep pointing to Jesus. That's who we aim to be.
God is All Powerful - The last session of our summer camp season we had two gentleman who dared to ask God for a sign that He was real. As they walked up to their cabin, an owl landed on the ground behind them and started following them. As they continued to walk they saw a shooting star and as they described it, "displayed colors and lasted longer than anything they had ever seen." To top if off, despite the lack of clouds and rain, flashes of lighting went across the sky. In their excitement of what they were experiencing they acknowledged that God was real. Just as they declared this truth the owl flew away. These young men hurried back to session just in time for the concluding worship session. The one young man as he came out of session gave me the biggest hug and explained what happened to him and everyone they could tell. It was a "burning bush" moment for them, to hear God speak through his creation.
This experience, and the many others this summer, proclaims that God has a plan to capture and pursue hearts here at MBC and He will use owls, shooting stars and lightning to show how much He loves and cares for us.
Continue to pray for us and all of our staff as we approach the fall season of retreats. Check out our website to see our different offerings from Family Camp, Men's and Women's Retreats, Fall Singles' Retreat and our Couples' Retreat.
We hope you will join us and we pray that God will continue to use this place to draw us closer to Him and to go and "make a disturbance" for the Gospel.
