Well, we made it. We survived 2020 and welcomed a new year.

Now let's get to work.

As we continue to grow, we're always looking for new and innovative ways to engage and grow our network of freelance journalists. We believe that Orato can become a home for freelance journalists
—a place of opportunity and respite from the daily news storm

In case you missed it, here's a link to our favorite 20 stories from 2020. We're proud of those stories and of all the work we have done together.

Let's take this year by the horns and tell more newsworthy and compelling first-person stories. Because, at the end of the day, that's why we're all here.

Stories we're seeking

Looking to pick up a story? Here are three of the stories that we are actively seeking. We also accept original ideas for consideration.

Press freedom

Journalists in the Philippines, particularly female journalists, face threats to their lives and livelihoods for speaking out against the government. We want to hear the first-person account of a Filipina or Filipino journalist and an event in which they were threatened or detained for disseminating the truth.

Niger villages attacked

At least 100 are dead after extremists attacked two villages on Niger's border with Mali, the country's prime minister said Sunday.

Capitol stormed

A pro-Trump mob invaded the Capitol Wednesday. We're looking for the first-person account of a witness to the mob storming the Capitol.

Grow your toolkit

Maybe your resolution this year is to hone your craft. Even if it isn't, we highly recommend Google's free journalist training program.

This isn't a program that is meant to replace journalism school, but it can improve your ability to fact check and verify the stories that you tell.

The course is split into three categories: fundamentals, introduction to machine learning, and hands-on machine learning.

Our editorial team has completed this training and found value in its lessons. We wouldn't share it if we didn't.
