Sign-in instructions: The children need to be signed-in by 10:00 am at the table outside the south entrance. The parent and child will receive a matching wrist band to wear while the children are in our care. A parent can also sign-in their child, after the children have been excused, by walking their child to Room 4 and signing-in there to receive a wristband.

The Youth Group will meet after service. Parents of youth will still sign-in at Room 4.

Please note, liturgical vestments and robes have not gone away. We are reserving their use for high seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost.
Welcome to the Spirit Space

Transitions. Steps take us from one level to another. On ramps and exit ramps funnel us from surface streets to highways and visa versa. Every day we are transitioning continually either intentionally or unintentionally. On Sunday mornings you transition both physically, by moving outside to inside our worship space, and spiritually with regard to your focus.

You now have the opportunity every Sunday morning to be more intentional in transitioning spiritually. Beginning October 7th,  the Beatitudes Chapel will be open and available on Sundays at 9 a.m. for prayer, meditation, or self-centering in preparation for our morning worship. We hope you will take advantage of this time to settle your hearts for encountering the Divine.

How Our Prayer List Works
Please submit your prayer requests including first and last name. As the congregation is drawn, individuals will pray in their own way in service of deep trust that God knows what is best. To add someone to the list, please email Janelle at or call 602-264-1221 x 103. Be sure to let us know if you would like them on the list for 30 or 60 days. We wish you all perfect and vibrant health and happiness.

One Book, One Church.
From the challenges of affordable housing to the future of Christianity as we know it, members of Beatitudes continue to expand their knowledge and challenge their suppositions. One member recently stated, “Our church challenges me to stretch myself into areas I normally wouldn’t have even considered.”
For the next six weeks (Sept. 30 - Nov. 11), we encourage you to read the book, The End of White Christian America by Robert P. Jones. No matter your political affiliation or religious leaning, the author will ask you to consider what the Christian church will look like when your child or grandchild reaches mid-life. On November 14th, Pastor Tony will lead a book discussion. Be a part of the next adventure of One Book, One Church.

Be the face of CoB!
Calling Extravagant Greeters

We are a people of God’s extravagant welcome! You know who you are…that enthusiastic ambassador with a smile for everyone and a warm hand shake to let someone know they belong.

A church greeter is the first- and last-person people see when visiting a church. But it’s more than a hand shake. Greeters play a vital role in forming a visitor's first impression of our church and, to some, their first impression of Jesus. You play a significant role in ensuring that people see and experience the love of CoB.

Join us on September 30 at 11:15 in the Chapel to become a Super Greeter for CoB. For more information, contact Janelle Tapphorn

Ruminate: Conversations on Things That Matter
Life is complex. To keep an open mind and try to hear and understand diverse views on various issues can be overwhelming.

Starting October 7th, we roll out a new discussion group, “Ruminate: Conversations on Things That Matter.” We will meet Sunday mornings after worship at 11:30 am in the Chapel for lively dialogue on ethical subjects such as – sanctity of life, public health, sex and gender, and work. Grab a cup of coffee and join Pastor Tony to talk about things that really matter in your life and society.

Since our congregational meeting, we continue to move forward on Phase I of the project to revitalize our property. We have solicited names of construction companies in an effort to select a Construction Manager and General Contractor (which may or may not be from the same company) to lead this project. After narrowing the field to either two or three businesses, Pat Ezerski, Mike Klatt, Jeff Milton and Pastor Tony will conduct interviews. We hope to complete this process in the next week or two.
Take a look at the Barduson Architectural Firm conceptual design possibilities for Phase I and II for Church of the Beatitudes located on the display easels just inside the foyer of the Worship Center. Stay tuned for further updates.

Thank you so much to all of you that give to Bishops Pantry on an ongoing basis. The items that are presently needed most: soup, canned vegetables, (corn seems to be the favorite), canned fruit, breakfast bars, pasta & sauce, mac n cheese boxes, cereal, peanut butter, jam & crackers. We encourage you to pick up a few items weekly or monthly and demonstrate in a tangible way that we are a caring church.   THANK YOU!

Look for the container unit in the foyer of the Worship Center which will make ongoing giving of items very easy!  The unit houses baskets that are labeled "ICM," "BISHOPS PANTRY," "SHOEBOX MINISTRY," and "MARYLAND SCHOOL."  If you have a very large bag of clothing for ICM, the ICM barrel will be in Nelson Hall.  You can also set it by the container unit and Faith in Action will take care of it.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who donated both books and money for Maryland school. Your generous spirits and kind hearts made the book drive very, very successful! We received a total of $1200.00!! That will buy a large number of much needed books that will remain in the classrooms permanently. The teachers are delighted!

CLM is asking for cookies to serve during social hour after church. These can be store bought or homemade.

In addition, CLM is looking for bakers to provide cookies, brownies, bars, etc. for the upcoming Sing Phoenix! Choral Festival, October 18-20. You can freeze your goodies and bring them to Gayle Lawson who is accepting early donations. Thanks so much!

Do you have a servant heart? Sign up to Usher today!

Ushers play a vital role in our weekly service. They greet people, hand out bulletins, and help direct people to find restrooms and locations of other campus meeting rooms. They take up the offertory collection and serve communion to our members. After the service, they go through the aisles and pick up lost items and used bulletins. If you're a new or a seasoned member, this is an easy way to get involved with our church as well as get to know everyone better. If you're interested in being a difference maker, please sign up by contacting Joyce Glazner at

On behalf of the Southwest Conference UCC Disaster Ministries I extend our prayers and concerns to our congregations and their communities who are in the path of Hurricane Florence. The hurricane is expected to make landfall during the next couple days along the North Carolina coast. Due to the size of the storm, its anticipated path and it’s expected “stalling” along the coast, several states will be severely impacted. If you have family and friends in any of these locations, I would strongly encourage that they heed the local and regional warnings being issued by emergency management officials.
You and your congregation may want to extend your compassion and assistance to the areas affected. The links below will help you to develop your response. Keep in mind that UCC Disaster Ministries focuses on long-term recovery and our hard work will begin after the initial impact and short-term response of agencies equipped to do so. And, it will continue for a long time.
I encourage you to consider sending your hurricane financial gifts through your congregation to the SWC Office, designated for Hurricane 2018 Fund. If you or your congregation decides to offer material assistance (i.e., Clean-up or Hygiene kits) please let me know,, or notify the Conference Office. Your shared efforts may help other congregations with their response or we may be able to combine efforts in some way for a greater and more cost effective impact (i.e., shipping kits together from multiple congregations).

Allow me to introduce myself...
My name is Janelle Tapphorn and I have been blessed to have been chosen as the Church of the Beatitudes' Communications/Media Specialist and Pastoral Assistant. I recently received my Master's degree in Journalism from Regent University, and did my internship with Duet: Partners in Health & Aging. You can learn more about me by visiting my website at .

On a personal note, you will find me fluttering and floating about the church in pursuit of ways to serve and share your stories of spirituality and hope. And, oh yea, I'm also the blond girlie with a blue butterfly tattooed on my right forearm...something slightly in common with a certain well-known church leader here at Church of the Beatitudes. Why a blue butterfly you ask? It is a significant symbol to me of the power of God's presence in the smallest moments of our lives. Eleven years ago, my husband Dave and I adopted our daughter, Joy, from China. On the day we were to meet her for the first time, a small but brilliant blue butterfly flew onto our tour bus as we were driving to the adoption center and landed smack dab on the window next to my head. A fellow adoptive mom sitting behind me tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, "Janelle, you know what that means don't you?" It was a confirmation to me that we were doing exactly God's will for our lives and making Jesus alive in a remote corner of the world where hope was needed. In Christ we are a new creation and I am reminded of that truth anytime I encounter a butterfly. Just as it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (NIV). Please introduce yourself to me the next time you see me, and share any cool butterfly encounters you've had that rocked your world! I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you!
