Justin has a BA, Political Science from Mary Washington College.

As marijuana industry expands, power demand taxes U.S. grids

The $3.5 billion U.S. cannabis market is emerging as one of the nation's most power-hungry industries, with the 24-hour demands of thousands of indoor growing sites taxing aging electricity grids and unraveling hard-earned gains in energy conservation.

Without design standards or efficient equipment, the facilities in the 23 states where marijuana is legal are responsible for greenhouse-gas emissions almost equal to those of every car, home and business in New Hampshire. While reams of regulations cover everything from tracking individual plants to package labeling to advertising, they lack requirements to reduce energy waste.

Mexican Catholic Church endorses medical marijuana use

The Roman Catholic archbishop of Mexico City, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, has endorsed the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Rivera said the Church was prepared to share its views on the issue in a series of forums that the federal government is planning across the country in January, even though it has not been formally invited to participate.

“The Church has never had any problem in recommending the use of all of nature’s elements that promote health and a better life for citizens,” said Rivera.

Meet the States Most Likely to Legalize in 2016

In 2016, as many as 16 states could vote on legalization through ballot initiatives or through state legislators. But don't get your hopes up about America leaping from 4 to 20 legal states by New Year's 2017. Many of those initiatives won't make it onto the ballot, or make it through legislative votes.

But don't despair, either. There is a strong chance that the U.S. could double the total number of legal states in 2016. Here are the five most likely to legalize, and the biggest hurdles that they'll face in 2016.

Marijuana Clubs expected to be barred again in district with emergency legislation
Marijuana advocates were hoping the District might let a piece of legislation that barred the creation of private clubs to provide marijuana to patrons expire this month....

If the ban passes again, it will deal a blow to marijuana entrepreneurs who have been waiting for the opportunity to expand their businesses. In the District, the cannabis industry is expected to grow into a $120 million industry by 2020, according to experts from D.C.-based New Frontier Financials.
