How Global Spending on Alcohol & Tobacco May Impact WorldWide Marijuana Sales

Household expenditures on alcohol and tobacco serve as a useful proxy to contrast consumer spending for products that can be complements or substitutes for cannabis. Australia, Canada and Germany had the highest levels of spending among the countries analyzed. Notably, spending in Australia was over seven times the spending in Colombia and more than 38 times the spending in Mexico.  This data suggests that the scale of potential revenue generation for legal cannabis industries will vary widely within and across regions around the world.
