Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Action:
No Celebration Without Legislation
#DeliverforVotingRights

This year for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King, and Yolanda Renee King, along with faith leaders, civil rights leaders, and voting rights advocates, call upon all of us to demand voting rights legislation now. Watch this important message from Martin Luther King III and sign this petition to President Biden and Congress, demanding action now!

Our leaders have a historic opportunity to restore and protect our right to vote by passing the Freedom to Vote Act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

From the Civil War to the Jim Crow era, the filibuster has blocked popular bills to stop lynching, end poll taxes, and fight workplace discrimination. Now it’s being used to block voting rights. The weaponization of the filibuster is racism cloaked in procedure and it must go.

There’s no time to wait - we honor Dr. King with action.

Rallies for Fair Maps
At noon on Jan. 21, outside 16 courthouses all across Wisconsin, activists will be holding rallies in favor of fair maps, fair representation, and fair courts.

Wisconsin’s new voting district maps are in the hands of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin. The Fair Maps Coalition is working to keep this issue in the public eye and let the courts know that we are watching and expect them to act in a nonpartisan manner when deciding which maps will determine representation in our state for the next decade.

Rabbi Bonnie Margulis, Executive Director of WFVJ, will speak at the Madison rally. Meet us at noon at the State Street side of the capital.

Healthy School Meals for All
The pandemic has made school lunch free for all public school students. Advocates are hoping to make the change permanent.

School meals play an important role in helping to ensure that every child in Wisconsin starts school ready to learn. A strong school meal program shows our commitment to the promotion of our children's health, allowing children to concentrate on graduating with the skills and knowledge they need to be college and career ready.

Please support the Healthy School Meals for All bill today!

National Blood Crisis - Please Donate!
The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care. Doctors have been forced to make difficult decisions about who receives transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments.

The Red Cross has had less than a one-day supply of critical blood products in recent weeks – well below the ideal five-day supply. The Red Cross works with hospitals around the clock to help meet the needs of patients, but blood product distributions to hospitals are currently outpacing the number of blood donations coming in.

During this blood crisis, the Red Cross asks the country to roll up a sleeve to help ensure people in their communities receive the care they need. Make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Help Me Celebrate My Birthday!
I am celebrating a milestone this year as I turn 60 on January 14. My grandmother would say it’s a ‘special birthday’ – any birthday ending in a zero was ‘special’. I hope you will join me in marking this ‘special’ milestone.

You likely know two important things about me:

1. I am a tireless advocate for justice. I will not stop until all lives are valued and respected, including black and brown lives.
2. I have been doing this work for over four decades. I have seen the vast inequities in our society that have, at long last, been laid bare. And I know it is past time for all people of faith to stand up and say “Enough!”.

My goal is to mark this event by securing 60 gifts for WI Faith Voices for Justice from all of you who share my passion for justice.

Donate what you can, give once or twice, share with others you know. My goal is to reach 60 gifts by February 15, 2022.

Donate on Facebook or at wisconsinfaithvoicesforjustice.org

We have critical work to do in 2022 to address racial equity, voting rights, worker rights and immigration justice. This work is only possible if we have the funding.

Thank you for joining me in championing justice as I celebrate turning 60.

With Gratitude,

Rabbi Bonnie
