Monash Grows Mini Tumours for Bowel Cancer Therapy

MPCCC researchers at Monash University and Cabrini are using cutting-edge techniques to grow a patient’s three- dimensional tumour outside the body.

In what is the ultimate form of personalised medicine, this “mini laboratory” can then be used as a quick and cost effective way to study tumour biology and determine the best treatment for an individual’s cancer.

New Centre Dedicated to Blood Cancer Research
Alfred Health and Monash University are set to establish Australia’s first dedicated blood cancer research centre, thanks to a $1.2 million grant from the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). The ACRF Blood Cancer Therapeutics Centre, based at The Alfred, will be home to the latest technology available in blood cancer research and will enable researchers to dramatically improve outcomes for patients with blood cancer. Read more »

Metastatic breast cancer patients at Peninsula Health will benefit from the appointment of a dedicated breast care nurse, thanks to the legacy of a breast cancer patient and the support of the McGrath Foundation. Read more »

Professor John Zalcberg OAM Appointed as Inaugural Tony Charlton Chair of Oncology
The Alfred Hospital announced Prof John Zalcberg OAM as the inaugural Tony Charlton Chair of Oncology  on 3rd November. A joint appointment between Monash University and the Alfred, this leadership position will steer the Alfred’s oncology program into the future, cultivating innovative new treatments and transferring research findings into clinical practice. Read more »

Ensuring Optimal Care for Women with Ovarian Cancer
Women with ovarian cancer are often diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease and need to be quickly referred to one of Victoria’s three specialist health services for treatment, based at Monash Health, Mercy Hospital for Women or The Women’s. Read more »

Prime Minister opens Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute
Australia’s capacity to deliver innovative solutions to critical global health problems has been enhanced with the development of Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) which was officially opened today by Prime Minister the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP. Read more »

Monash to lead new Medicines Manufacturing Centre
Monash will lead the development of a world-class Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC), as part of the Victorian Government’s Future Industries initiative. The Victorian Premier, the Hon. Daniel Andrews, announced the State Government would invest $4 million in the Melbourne-based centre that will help generate export growth for Victoria’s expanding pharmaceuticals industry. Read more »


Dr Maria Kaparakis-Liaskos receives Tall Poppy Science Award
Congratulations to Dr Maria Kaparakis-Liaskos, one of 10 leading young researchers to be recognised with a prestigious Young Tall Poppy Science Award. Dr Kaparakis-Liaskos is researching the body’s immune responses during helicobacter infection, a stomach bacteria that can lead to gastric cancer. Read more »

Dr Sam Greenall named inaugural Ethan Davies Fellow
Dr Sam Greenall from Hudson Institute’s Centre for Cancer Research has been awarded the inaugural Ethan Davies Fellowship, to develop “dish-grown” tumour cultures that can be used to screen new drug treatments for a rare type of brain cancer. Dr Greenall was announced as the inaugural recipient of the Fellowship at an official launch hosted in Fremantle on October 8. Read more »

Victoria Trials New Cancer Performance Monitoring Framework
The development of a Victorian Cancer Performance Monitoring Framework (VCPMF) has entered its second phase and is now trialling a system for cancer performance data. The VCPMF is a joint undertaking between the Victorian Integrated Cancers Services (ICS) and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services. Read more »

Nurses Encouraged to Support National Bowel Cancer Screening Program
The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has established 19 health services as designated providers as part of a new National Bowel Cancer Screening Program model.These services will provide access for program participants who have received a positive faecal occult blood test (FBOT) and have no significant co-morbidities within 30 days of a GP referral. Read more »

Medical Research Future Fund announces Strategy and Priorities
The Australia Government released the Strategy and Priorities for the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) on November 9. The MRFF will provide grants of financial assistance to support health and medical research and innovation, with the objective of improving the health and wellbeing of Australians. Read more »
