Chaminade Nursing Students Support Upcoming Continuing Competency Requirements for Nurses

A group of senior nursing students from Chaminade University chose spreading awareness of upcoming continuing competency requirements as their service-learning project. Service-Learning is a method by which students learn through active participation in thoughtfully organize service conducted in and meeting the needs of the community. Thank you, Chaminade School of Nursing for your support of Hawai`i's upcoming Continuing Competency requirements for nurses!

Congratulations to HSCN's Past Executive Director, Barbara Mathews! Dr. Mathews was inducted into the UH Mānoa Nursing Alumni Hall of Fame at their 3rd annual Endowed Scholarship Fundraiser. We appreciate her years of dedication to the Center and her commitment to the nursing profession.

100 years of HBON

Congratulations to the Hawai'i Board of Nursing on your 100 years of service. The Board of Nursing ensures quality nursing care statewide by overseeing the licensing of nurses, nursing policy & regulations, and enforcing Continuing Competency requirements starting July 2017.

HMSA and Wilcox Medical Center donate $75,000

Kaua`i Community College Nursing Program has received a new simulation mannequin thanks to donations from HMSA, Wilcox Medical Center, and two other foundations. This advanced technology will enhance the learning for many nursing students! Read more here.

500 Cities: Local data for better health

Check out the CDC's new project, 500 Cities: Local Data for Better Health. This data analysis of 27 chronic disease measures for the 500 largest American cities and the census tracts within is available via an interactive website. Click here to view Honolulu's results by census tract or health measure.

SCHOLARSHIP & GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Gordon & June Ito Foundation Nursing Scholarship

The Gordon & June Ito Foundation nursing scholarship is open to all nursing students in their senior year attending a four-year accredited public university or college in Hawaii. The $10,000 scholarship is designed to help cover the cost of tuition for one full academic year for an undergraduate senior nursing student. Applicants are selected based on scholastic record, nursing awards and honors, community involvement, personal recommendations, and an essay.

Deadline for 2017 applications is May 1, 2017.

Culture of Health: Framework for Improving Hawai‘i’s Wellbeing
Friday, April 21, 2017, 12 pm to 1:30 pm

Culture of Health is an exciting integrated framework promoted through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Hawai‘i public health nursing branch obtained this leading-edge grant to apply the framework designed to take health to where the people live, learn, work and play. Culture of Health project is guiding people to honor their own self-health care and utilize best practices of wellbeing through a sense of place and integrated culture of community health.

Hospice Hawai`i's Hot Pursuit: Don't miss out on Hospice Hawai`i's 8th annual "Hot Pursuit", an "Amazing Race" style event that has contestants solving riddles and completing challenges on their way to the finish line. This event will be held on April 29, 2017 at Waterfront Plaza, Kaka`ako. Proceeds will help Hospice Hawai`i in their mission to bring hope, reduce fears and impact lives!
