AUGUST 2017

Thank you for taking our 2017 Nursing Workforce Survey!

Message from the Director

Aloha,

July 2017 was a big month for nurses in Hawai'i. The Hawai`i Board of Nursing celebrated 100 years of service; the first board meeting took place on July 11, 1917. This month also marks a turning point in time for Hawai`i's nurses. Starting with the licensure period that began on July 1, 2017, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses must complete continuing competency activities prior to relicensure in 2019, per Act 127 signed by Governor Ige in 2015. We have known for decades that lifelong learning is crucial to proving high quality care and remaining at the cutting edge of practice. This knowledge is validated through the new continuing competency requirement.

What does this mean for today? The time to begin a continuing competency activity is now. The Hawai`i Board of Nursing released guidelines on what activities a nurse may complete in order to gain compliance. Activities include, but are not limited to, becoming nationally certified, precepting students or employees, going back to school, and completing CEs. There is a good fit for every nurse, in every specialty, in every corner of the state. For more information and to review the Board of Nursing's guidebook on continuing competency, please visit: http://cca.hawaii.gov/pvl/boards/nursing/

The Hawai`i State Center for Nursing (HSCN) is actively engaging with state nursing associations, employers, schools of nursing and labor representatives to identify strategies that ensure the state nursing workforce meets this new requirement successfully. HSCN is currently integrating this requirement into state offerings, such as the Evidence-Based Practice program, supporting nursing student clinical placements, and engaging the nursing community in academic progression initiatives.

The success of this new requirement is dependent on our nurses' awareness of them. If you are a nurse, I urged you to become a champion for yourself and your colleagues in achieving this new requirement, just as you are a champion for your patients. Your success is our success, in healthcare, and as a state.

CCPS 2.0

Hawai‘i State Center for Nursing supports the coordination of nursing clinical placements for RN students on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i and Maui. The Centralized Clinical Placement System (CCPS), developed by Health Impact,  is the tool HSCN uses to coordinate nursing student placements. CCPS recently unveiled a new, updated version of its clinical placement program. Hawai‘i was the first site for the roll out.  Kathy DeGuerre and Emily Robinson, of HealthImpact, conducted on-site training sessions at the University of Hawai‘i's Information Technology Services Computer Lab for partnering schools of nursing and facilities on July 26-28, 2017 for partners using .

The school of nursing and facility coordinators were introduced to the new system and able to test it and update their data.  The feedback from these sessions was very positive, citing the improved user-friendly interface and elimination of overlap. New to this version is the addition of a Support Team messaging platform to facilitate direct access for assistance.  CCPS has plans to continue to improve its system and expand on the services being offered.  Hawaii coordinators will utilize the new system starting with the Spring 2018 cycle, beginning August 15, 2017.

HSCN also welcomes our new CCPS partners:  University of Hawai'i - West O'ahu College, University of Hawai'i Maui College, and Maui Health System, and welcomes back Tripler Army Medical Center.

(L to R): Emily Robinson, CCPS Technology and Special Projects Director;  Jennifer Nafarrete, MSN, RN, Lecturer of Nursing and  Director of Clinical Facilities at Hawai'i Pacific University;  Kathy DeGuerre, CCPS Healthcare Program Manager; and Alisha Holden, MSN, MBA, RN, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Faculty & Clinical Coordinator of University of Phoenix, pause while training in the new CCPS system.
