2017 Hawai`i Nurse Residency Program Summit Recap

The Hawai`i Nurse Residency Program (NRP) Summit was held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.   Academic partners, NRP coordinators and residents were in attendance to hear Senior Director, Nursing Leadership, Jayne Willingham from Vizient provide a update on NRP nationally.  Ms. Willingham spoke about the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program and its focus on data and analytics enhancements, increased responsiveness to member requests, and more emphasis on leveraging the knowledge sharing with the community.  In 2017, we will be seeing website enhancements including mobile friendly surveys for the residents, website re-design and curriculum updates.   Hawai`i NRP partners shared their current best practices in operation at the individual facilities.

The day concluded with a showcase of various Evidence-Based Practice projects completed by graduates of the Hawai`i NRP.  Presentation topics included bedside reporting, comfort care, and pre-op Hibiclens prep.

A huge mahalo to our NRP partners for making the 2017 Hawai`i NRP Summit at success! Hawai`i NRP partners include:  Chaminade University, Castle Medical Center, Hawai`i Pacific Health Systems, Hilo Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Hawai`i, Kapi`olani Community College, The Queen's Medical Center, University of Hawai`i at Mānoa, and University of Phoenix.

HSCN's Evidence-Based Practice Program Expands to Neighbor Islands

The Hawai`i State Center for Nursing's Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Program held the fifth bi-monthly meeting of our twelve month internship program on February 2, 2017. Kona Community Hospital and The Queen's Conference Center generously hosted our two internship meeting sites.

This year, our EBP program incorporated an innovative idea. We use GoToMeeting to remotely link sites between O`ahu and Hawai`i Island. Technology has become a strategic tool to facilitate participation and engagement in our internship program by our neighbor island teams.

The February internship meeting agenda consisted of project progress reports and discussion followed by didactic content focused on evaluating and sustaining a practice change. This session also addressed writing abstracts for dissemination. Teams continued working on their projects after a lunch break and into the afternoon.
